My Air Fryer Sweet Potato Fries are tossed with a spice mix that adds amazing flavor, and I love them with Sriracha Aioli Dipping Sauce. I’ve updated the instructions for this recipe to cover the different types of Air Fryer models I’ve had.

Air Fryer Spicy Sweet Potato Fries found on

These Air Fryer Sweet Potato Fries were the first thing I made when I got an Air Fryer, and now they’re a treat I love to make occasionally, even if they’re a slight splurge on carbs! It’s the spicy seasoning mix I use that makes my sweet potato fries so delicious, so please don’t even think about skipping that! And this recipe makes enough of the spice mix to have leftovers to store in a small glass jar, and you’ll be glad you have it ready for next time.

Sweet Potato fries never get as crisp as fries made from white potatoes, but the Air Fryer Sweet Potato Fries were definitely a bit crisper than oven-baked sweet potato fries. It took us a couple of tries to get the timing and temperature right, and you need to be careful to check your sweet potato fries a few times, and turn the fries once during the cooking time, but otherwise the hardest thing about making Air Fryer sweet potato fries is cutting up the sweet potatoes!

If you want to use those pre-cut sweet potato fries that show up this time of year, no judgement from me, but those will cook a bit faster. I hope you’ll try these tasty sweet potato fries in the Air Fryer, or try my baked sweet potato fries if you don’t have an Air Fryer!

Which Air Fryer Did I Use for Air Fryer Sweet Potato Fries:

I first made these sweet potatoes fries in a drawer-type type Air Fryer. After I became an Air Fryer convert I splurged on the Cuisinart Countertop Convection Air Fryer Toaster Oven (affiliate link) with a large separate rack and basket, which is the one you see in these photos, and I’ve updated the instructions to cover both types of Air Fryer. All Air Fryers cook a bit differently, so I recommend checking the sweet potato fries every few minutes as they’re cooking.

What if you don’t have an Air Fryer?

I loved the ease of making sweet potato fries in the air fryer, but if you’re not interested in another cooking gadget just make my Spicy Baked Sweet Potato Fries instead!

I love Sriracha Aioli Dipping Sauce for Sweet Potato Fries!

I’m giving you ten options for dipping your sweet potato fries, but I ALWAYS eat them with Sriracha Aioli Dipping made by combining 1/4 cup sour cream, 1/4 cup mayo, 2 T fresh squeezed lime juice (or a bit less if you’re not a huge fan of lime), and Sriracha sauce to taste (start with 1 tsp. and add more until it’s as spicy as you prefer.)

What’s the difference between yams and sweet potatoes?

These fries are made with orange skinned sweet potatoes and not yams! Please consult Google if you don’t believe me about this!

How to Make Air Fryer Sweet Potato Fries:

(This is only a summary of the steps for the recipe; please scroll down for complete printable recipe. Or if you use the JUMP TO RECIPE link at the top of the page, it will take you directly to the complete recipe.)

  1. Peel sweet potatoes, cut into thick slices, and then slice into fries. (There are good photos of this process in the recipe for Spicy Baked Sweet Potato Fries.)
  2. I like thicker cut sweet potato pieces. If your fries are thinner, you’ll definitely need to cook them for a shorter time.
  3. Mix together ground coriander, ground fennel, ground oregano, Aleppo pepper (or cayenne), and salt to make the spice blend.
  4. Toss the cut fries with 2 T olive oil and about 1 T of the spice mixture. (You can probably get by with a bit less oil, but I wanted to be sure the spice mixture would stick.)
  5. Pre-heat Air Fryer to 350F (if needed). Then add fries and set cooking time for 20 minutes. (Your actual cooking time will be less than that. Different Air Fryers cook hotter or cooler, even at the same temperature, so I recommend checking the progress a few times as they cook.)
  6. Cook the sweet potatoes for 4 minutes without opening the Air Fryer. Then check to see if they’re starting to brown.
  7. We cooked the sweet potato fries 4 minutes more, adjust that time a bit shorter if yours were already quite brown after the first four minutes.
  8. When sweet potato fries are lightly browned, remove the basket from the air-fryer and use a large turner to quickly turn the fries (in the Cuisinart Air Fryer) or shake the basket (in a drawer-type Air Fryer).
  9. Put the basket back into the Air Fryer and cook 2-4 minutes more on the other side, or until fries are cooked through and golden brown.
  10. We cooked the Sweet Potato fries you see in these photos 12 minutes total, turning once. This timing is for the Cuisinart Convection Air Fryer Toaster Oven (affiliate link) which cooks hotter than the drawer-type Air Fryer. Be sure to check your Sweet Potato Fries at least every 3-4 minutes as they’re cooking.
  11. My Air Fryer will resume cooking for the programmed amount of time when you close the door again. For some models, you may need to set the time and/or push start again.
  12. Serve hot and enjoy!
  13. If you like Sriracha, these are absolutely fantastic with Sriracha Aioli Dipping Sauce, but serve with your favorite condiment!

Air Fryer Sweet Potato Fries

Air Fryer Sweet Potato Fries are so delicious and these perfectly-seasoned sweet potato fries are easy to make in the Air Fryer! As you can see, I prefer thicker-cut pieces for my sweet potato fries, so if you cut your fries thinner, be sure to adjust the cooking time!

Ingredients

  • 2 large sweet potatoes (see notes)
  • 2 T olive oil (see notes)
  • 1 T sweet potato fry seasoning mix
  • Sriracha Dipping Sauce, optional but good; see recipe in the notes!

Seasoning Mix Ingredients:

  • 2 T ground coriander
  • 1 T ground fennel
  • 1 T dried oregano
  • 1 T Aleppo Pepper or a smaller amount of Cayenne
  • 2 T kosher salt

Instructions

  1. Cut off both ends of the sweet potatoes and peel with a sharp vegetable peeler. Then cut each sweet potato in half lengthwise and again crosswise so you have four pieces.
  2. Slice each piece into 2 or 3 thick slices, then cut each slice into fries. (I made them about 1/2 - 5/8 inches thick, or about 12 - 15 mm. If your sweet potato fries are thinner than that, you'll need to reduce the cooking time.
  3. In mortar and pestle or spice grinder, grind together coriander, fennel, oregano, and Aleppo pepper (or cayenne). Mix in salt. (This makes enough for several batches of sweet potatoes, so you'll need a small jar to store the extra.)
  4. Preheat the Air Fryer to 350F/176C while you put the cut fries in a bowl and toss with olive oil, and then with the seasoning mix.
  5. When the preheating is done, add fries to the basket of the Air Fryer, set time for 20 minutes, and push start. (Your actual cooking time will probably be less than that. Different Air Fryers cook hotter or cooler, even at the same temperature, so I recommend checking the progress in 3-4 minute intervals as they cook.)
  6. Cook the sweet potatoes for 4 minutes without opening the Air Fryer. Then check to see if they’re starting to brown.
  7. We cooked the sweet potato fries 4 minutes more on the first side, adjust that time a bit shorter if yours were already quite brown after the first four minutes.
  8. When sweet potato fries are lightly browned, remove the basket from the air-fryer and use a large turner to quickly turn the fries (in the Cuisinart Air Fryer) or shake the basket (in a drawer-type Air Fryer).
  9. Put the basket back into the Air Fryer and cook 2-4 minutes more on the other side, or longer for some Air Fryer models. Cook them until fries are cooked through and golden brown. (My Air Fryer will resume cooking for the programmed amount of time when you shut the door. For some models, you may need to set the timer and/or push start again.
  10. We cooked the Sweet Potato fries you see in these photos 12 minutes total, turning once. This timing is for the Cuisinart Convection Air Fryer Toaster Oven (affiliate link) which cooks hotter than the drawer-type Air Fryer. Be sure to check your Sweet Potato Fries at least every 3-4 minutes as they’re cooking
  11. Serve hot, with Sriracha Aioli Dipping Sauce if desired. (See that recipe in notes.)

Notes

We used about 1 1/2 lbs. total weight of sweet potatoes after peeling.

I ALWAYS eat my sweet potatoes fries with Sriracha Aioli Dipping made by combining 1/4 cup sour cream, 1/4 cup mayo, 2 T fresh squeezed lime juice (or a bit less if you're not a huge fan of lime), and Sriracha sauce to taste (start with 1 tsp.)

Low-Carb Diet / Low-Glycemic Diet / South Beach Diet Suggestions:
The Air Fryer Sweet Potato Fries have 19 net carbs per serving, so they’re a slight splurge for a low-carb diet but something I have occasionally for a treat. Sweet Potato Fries would be approved for the phase 2 or 3 of the original South Beach Diet, and they’re also vegan, dairy-free, and gluten-free.
