How to Contact Danica
Thanks for Your Interest in Danica's Kitchen!
Danica's Kitchen is my personal blog, where I share recipes I’m cooking in my own kitchen. I hope my blog is a resource for anyone who likes the kind of easy carb-conscious recipes this blog is known for.
How to Contact Danica:
To contact me, send your e-mail to [email protected]
Answering Questions from Readers:
I love to hear from people who are readers of Danica's Kitchen and will do my best to answer simple questions, although I don’t have the training or the time to give full-fledged dieting advice. If your question is about a specific recipe, please consider leaving it as a comment on that post so others can benefit from the answer.
How to Leave a Comment:
To leave a comment, just click where it says “Leave a Reply” at the end of the post. Some comments will come to me in an e-mail and won’t show up on the blog until I publish them, and I’m not sitting by the computer waiting for comments 100% of the time, so thanks for your patience!
Reach me Through Social Media:
I check in on Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, and Pinterest most days, and try to respond to people who reach me there, but I can’t always keep up with comments on social media so if you really need to reach me, leaving a comment on the blog or sending e-mail is better.
About Advertising on Danica's Kitchen:
If you are promoting a food-related product and would be interested in advertising on a network of food blogs, please contact She Media. I only accept advertising through this network, and never sell text links or do sponsored posts of any type.
My Thoughts About Reviewing Cookbooks or Products
This blog is about what I’m cooking in my own kitchen, so I’m only interested in talking about cookbooks or products I’ve personally used and would happily buy again. Because I have limited time to try new products or cookbooks, I’ve decided to no longer accept books or other products for review. I do love to mention cookbooks I’m using and talk about my favorite products on the blog, but when I do that I enjoy being able to tell my readers that I bought them myself. (If you’re a food blogger who has written a book, feel free to drop me a line to let me know about it and if it interests me I’ll be happy to buy your book.)
Working with Other Bloggers:
I don’t use guest posts of any kind, and don’t participate in any kind of sponsored campaigns. I’m always happy to have my work included in blogger recipe round-ups (as long as it doesn’t include the actual recipe and uses a format that features a photo plus a link to get the recipe from my site.)

Is there any way you could please reduce, and amount of ads that are flipping all around on your website? It is absolutely impossible to read anything with all of the ads and the flipping that’s constantly going on. Thank you very much appreciated.
I use my site all day long and don’t see any ads flipping around at all. I am going to refer this to my ad manager and see if she has any idea what you are seeing. And to be honest, I think my site has far fewer ads than many food blogs. Of course I don’t want the ads to be annoying, but they pay the bills at my house, so they aren’t ever going to go away.
Have you tried using the JUMP TO RECIPE link at the top of the post to go right to the recipe? That will skip most of the ads.
[Added later] I did send your comment to my ad manager and this is her reply:
“I’m not really sure what she means by the “flipping” of the ads? We have the flexible ad containers set to the maximum size an ad would be so that if a larger or smaller ad loads, the content below it doesn’t really shift up or down to disrupt the user experience. I took a look at a few pages and I’m not seeing any instance of the ads getting in the way of the content.”
What do you fix when you seem to have no appetite for anything?
I’m sorry to hear that’s happening for you, and I’m not sure I can really help you with that, since everyone has vastly different food preferences! And my appetite is pretty good most any time of the day. One thing I do is keep things like low-carb yogurt, string cheese, and Fairlife protein drinks in the fridge and when I don’t have time to make an actual meal, I grab one of those.

I bought the jumbo silicone muffin cups you recommend (Chamber Bay, Baker’s dozen) to make the egg muffin recipes. Regular muffin pans, well greased, and foil/ paper muffin cups just don’t work. There were no instructions and the box didn’t say, but do you grease the muffins cups before adding the egg mixture? I don’t like the oil sprays, but would consider for these. I just want the egg muffins to come out of the cup and not stain the cup during the baking process.
Yes, I do grease the muffin cups. I don’t use non-stick spray a lot either, but it is perfect for this.
Thank you for making available the removed from the site recipe for leftover turkey lasagna! After most of my six children began families of their own I stopped making the leftover lasagna recipe we all thoroughly enjoyed mainly because I no longer made the holiday meal and had no leftovers.
This year due to covid and other circumstances my single daughter and I decided our Christmas dinner would be the leftover turkey lasagna using deli turkey.
I couldn’t find my recipe. I couldn’t find it on your site. 😞 disappointment. Then it popped up in a deeper search! Yippee and thank you!
We know it is NOT healthy on any day other than Christmas Day so we will enjoy without guilt 🤗.
Oh good, so glad that worked out for you. And yes you have to have a few splurges during the holidays.!
Have you ever cooked with konjac noodles? I want to try the pasta salad recipe you posted this week but not sure I want to spend the money on palmini when I’ve not liked the canned hearts of palm previously. Does soaking it and pre-cooking it get rid of that brined flavoring? Thank you.
I haven’t tried Konjac noodles, sorry. I think if you boil the Palmini Pasta for 5 minutes as I recommend in that recipe it definitely makes the Palmini noodles taste more like pasta and have the texture of pasta and removes the brined taste they have when you use them right from the can. But I do like hearts of palm, so I can’t say for sure if you would like them. We have been loving them when they are cooked though!
Wish I knew what recipe this is referring to! You can leave a comment on the actual recipe.
Curious…when I purchase 1 of your affiliate products, how does it know to give you credit?
The link is an affiliate link to Amazon.com that has my account number in there somehow!
I saved the link for your fabulous Thai chicken soup ••• but, sadly, I got a message the link “has been removed” when I pulled up my saved email ID sent to myself. Can you teach into archives and forward it to me. This time I’ll copy and paste rather than save the link. (I still have the Thai chilies in the freezer, as you suggested, fun the last time I made it.)
Hi Ellen, sending it to you by e-mail.
I want to unsubscribe. Can’t find where you do that
If you are subscribed to something that comes by e-mail, there is a link at the bottom left on every e-mail that says, “CLICK HERE TO SAFELY UNSUBSCRIBE.”
That is the only way you can be subscribed to this site that I am aware of.
This ia not a comment or question about one certain recipe. I would like to know if your recipes are diabetic friendly. My son has type 1 and I have type 2
I’m not quite sure what your definition of “diabetic friendly” is. I don’t consider myself qualified to give dietary advice for a medical condition. But I will say that every recipe has nutritional information (below the instructions in the actual recipe) so if you know what requirements you are looking for, you can surely find recipes that are suitable.
If you are mostly looking for recipes that are low in carbs, you can find a category for that in the Recipe Index. I would estimate about 75% of my recipes are low in carbs, maybe a bit more.
Hi Kalyn, this isn’t a recipe question, although all your recipes are amazing, it is the pronunciation of your first name I am inquiring about. I named my daughter Ralyn, pronounced ‘Ray-Lin’, thinking I went a simple route, but it’s almost the last thing she’s been called in her 17 years -it’s usually. ‘Rau-Lin’ amount other things. People usually just shorten her name to Ray. Anyway, I’m curious of your names pronunciation and if you’ve had any similar issues? Thank you!!!
Hi Shauna,
My name is pronounced Kay Lynn. But many people mispronounce it. I guess I am used to it, and it doesn’t bother me too much, but tell your daughter I know what she is going through. I do think having a distinctive spelling has been good for the internet! Glad you are enjoying the recipes.
Hi Kalyn! – Happy New Year 2021!
I wanted to let you know that we made this recipe yesterday! We used the follow items –
– For the beans, we used Camellia Brand dry cannellini beans.
– For the sausage, we used Butterball® Natural Hardwood Smoked Turkey Sausage 13 oz. Pack
– Fresh Basil we purchased from Publix.
– For the tomatoes, we used Muir Glen Fire Roasted Diced Tomatoes – 14oz
Let me tell you, THIS WAS EXCELLENT!
I browned the low fat sausage until crispy and scraped the little charred bits from the pan to add to the stew. Fresh pressed garlic too! Next time we’ll make a double batch and freeze individual serving sizes!
Thanks for the great food! – Jenny
Glad you enjoyed it. But this comment is not on the recipe page, so I am not 100% sure which recipe it was. Maybe Cannellini Bean and Sausage Stew?
I simply love the recipe . Twice baked cabbage. It was very good and I will pass it on
Thanks Linda, so glad you enjoyed it!
I love this website for the wonderful low carb recipes. I’ve made many of them and they are great.
What I’m hating is the bombardment of popup ads all over the pages (each and every page). I can barely stand to navigate the site any more.
If you are talking about the ad that shows up around the edges of the content, I have a complaint in to my ad network about that. Hopefully it can be removed quickly.
There shouldn’t be a lot of pop-up ads in general though. If you see one that pops up if you can send me a screenshot I can get it removed.
Thanks for letting me know. I use the site mostly on desktop and don’t see pop-ups but I don’t want them on mobile either.
Hello. I just wanted to say thank you so much for this blog. It’s organized very clearly, and I love that it isn’t gimmick-y or preachy about any particular diet. Using your site has made finding new carb-conscious recipes actually enjoyable rather than a chore. You rock.
Thanks so much for the nice thoughts. I am so glad my approach is helpful for you. I am not into telling people what they should eat; I believe everyone gets to make their own food choices! So I am just here to offer options.
Hi there
I really don’t like stevia sweetener. Do you think I could use Bulk Powders Zero cal syrup or huni as an alternative?
I’ve tried to get monk fruit sweetener but it’s hard to source in the uk.
Thank you in advance
Emma x
I’m not familiar with either of those sweeteners, but I think most any granulated zero calorie sweetener can be used interchangeably for the sweetener I use. Just be sure it says “granulated” on the package. Also some packages will say “measures 1:1 like sugar” and that is a good clue that it will work. Good luck!
Neither of the vinaigrette sauces are available to me so how do I make the basil vinaigrette sauces from scratch ?
If you google Vinaigrette Dressing you will find hundreds (if not thousands) of recipes for Vinaigrette Dressing. One that is emulsified (with a whisk or in a blender/food processor) will give best results in my recipe. Hope you enjoy!
I pinned one of your recipes years ago. It is one of our all time favorites. I can not find it on your website. Could you send it?
It was vegetarian whole wheat pasta with fried kale, tomato sauce and goat cheese
Hi Sarah,
I e-mailed you that recipe and the link, and for anyone else who sees this, here is the printer-friendly recipe for Vegetarian Whole Wheat Pasta with Fried Kale, Tomato Sauce, and Goat Cheese. Hope you enjoy!
I have started to not like eggs. Is there a substitute for your muffin recipes.
I’m afraid I have absolutely zero experiencing substituting other things for eggs. But I bet you could find a lot about that on Google because I know some people do it successfully.
I tried this recipe today, but I used “better than bouillon” in beef. I didn’t have fresh mushrooms or tomatoes, but substituted canned instead. It was delicious anyway!
I’m afraid I’m not able to tell what recipe you are referring to?
Thrilled to find your website! Should quinoa be avoided in phase 1 of South Beach? Looks like it’s considered a protein but a carb too…? Thanks!
I know that in the original South Beach Diet quinoa was phase 2 or 3. Now that South Beach has morphed into a different program, I haven’t kept up with all those changes. I don’t know for sure which plan you’re following but you may have to consult a book for the version of SBD you’re using to find an accurate answer.
How can I register on your website and receive updates and newsletter and be part of your community?
Hi Bobbie,
You can click here and that will take you to the page where you enter your e-mail to sign up. Welcome!
Hi Kaylin, Just have to say that I really enjoy getting your newsletter and even though I don’t make all the recipes, I really enjoy reading them. The ones I have made, I’ve really enjoyed. The one-sheet cabbage and Kielbasa, to which I also add a few chicken thighs (cooked on a separate sheet) is fabulous! You offer so much variety for us low-carbers. Thank you!
BTW I’m in UT as well, just up (down?) the road in Park City. Stay safe and keep cooking!
Best, Kathy
Hi Kathy,
Thanks so much for that nice feedback! And always fun to hear from someone in Utah. You stay safe too, crazy times we are living through.
Hi Kalyn
I have just started to use my bread maker again due to the lock down with the coronavirus. Just a quick question I have a bulgar and red &white Quinoa seed mix, do I need to soak these for 1 hour before putting it into the bread machine?
thank you
Liz
Hi Liz,
I wish I felt confident to definitely answer the question, but I’m not really a bread-baking expert by any means! But in the bread machine recipe where I used bulgur wheat I did soak it for an hour to soften the bulgur, so I think that’s what I’d do with this type of mix as well. Good luck; hope that works for you!
Hi Kayln. Just looking over yiur delicious stir fry receipes and was wondering what wok you were using? Stir fry is new to me so looking for suggestions.
Thank you
Hi Lisa,
I actually have a couple of woks, so it will depend on what recipe you’re looking at! My best wok is probably a carbon-steel wok I bought at The Wok Shop in San Francisco, MANY years ago, but it’s not that photogenic for the blog. I have an inexpensive wok I bought at Costco that turned out to be great, and also a Green Pen Wok that I love. Hope you have fun stir-frying!
i am gaining weight on keto now. i used to lose a lot consistently, but now, though i am extremely careful, i am gaining or losing an ounce here or there. what can i do ? why doesn’t it work anymore ? any help would be appreciated because i feel like giving up but i have worked hard at this.
Sorry, but my focus is on creating recipes and I’m not qualified to give diet advice.
Hi Kalyn,
I am looking for side dish bean recipes that SBD 1. I’m looking for a bean to used as a protein to quickly satisfy hunger as a snack. I would like this made up ahead of time in the fridge. What do you recommend?
I don’t mean to be unhelpful, but I don’t have time to search out recipe suggestions for other people. And there is no way for me to know what recipes would appeal to you. I recommend you either use the search bar or look through the section for Dried Beans to find something that looks good. Good luck with phase one!
Beans really should NEVER EVER be slow cooked. Because unless you boil raw beans for at least 10 min, you risk becoming very ill! I’m sure you prob havnt experienced food born illness from undercooked beans. But encouraging people to slow cook beans is highly irresponsible. If beans are slow cooked and do not reach boiling for 10 min you actually increase the danger of the beans.
Please remove this and any slow cook bean recipe from your site now
I believe if you investigate further, you will find that caution is only needed for Red Kidney Beans. I do have a note in my recipe about that.
Could you try and do a “copy cat” recipe of this keto style?
https://www.recipezazz.com/recipe/glazed-apple-fritters-23043?utm_source=recipe-box-plugin&utm_medium=curatorcrowd&utm_campaign=curatorcrowd&utm_content=justapinch.com
Looks tasty, but desserts are so not my specialty and I wouldn’t have a clue how to make a keto version of this.
Kayyn,
Pizza chicken is great and been making regularly. I have 2 questions.
Can I make it the day before and refrigerate overnight before cooking?
Can it be made in a disposable aluminum pan?
Keep up the good work on your recipes.
Thank you,
Duane Stover
Powell TN
My only concern about making the chicken ahead and refrigerating, then baking is that you want the chicken to be at room temperature when it goes into the oven. As long as you take it out and wait for that, I think it should work.
I don’t have much experience baking in disposable aluminum pan, but I think a pan that conducts heat better (glass or ceramic) will work better for that recipe.
Glad you are enjoying the recipes!
I have been eating low carb, not keto, for 8 years but I have been bored with my cooking and have started looking for new recipes. I find it frustrating because every recipe calls for cheese, bacon or they are desserts and most vegetables are too expensive, like cauliflower.
I am writing to you in hopes you can provide me with suggestions that will help me add some variety to my diet.
Thank you for your time.
Hi Carol,
There are over 2,000 recipes on this site and probably 3/4 of them are low in carbs, if not more. It’s impossible for me to know what would appeal to you, so I think the best suggestion I can think of is for you to think of an ingredient (or several ingredients) you’d like to use, and then enter them into the search bar on the site. That will give you all the recipes that use those ingredients. Use the orange tags at the top of the recipe (above the title) to check whether it is low in carbs. Hope that helps.
Kalyn
Dear Kalyn,
I absolutely love your recipe pages, which I stumbled upon looking for south beach diet recipe. I used the Southbeach diet many years ago and lost over 50 pounds. I was very successful and kept up the healthy eating and maintained my target weight of around 120-130. I’ve gained a few pounds within this past year and am really feeling it. Anyway, I just wanted to thank you for the delicious recipes that I’ve made for myself and my husband. So, thank you again.
Kind regards,
Susan
Hi Susan,
Thanks so much for the nice feedback. It really means a lot to me!
Kalyn
Ok, I wrote down the ingredients that I needed for a meal and bought the food, however, I can’t find the recipe. Here is what I bought, hopefully you can tell we the recipe name: Spike Seasoning, diced tomatoes, cucumbers, fresh Basil, Bell peppers, rotel and red curry paste. Thank you for your help.
Hi Karen,
I’m on vacation so I just saw this message. I don’t know what that recipe is, but enter the ingredients into the search bar (separated by commas) and you should get the recipes that have those ingredients!
I would love to make the Pepperoni pizza chicken bake–but can’t find a “print” button. Is it just me or is it missing from this recipe?
In the box where the actual recipe is located there’s a green button that says PRINT RECIPE. I know technology can be complicated, let me know if you don’t see that!
Hello there,
My name is Ivan Serrano and I am freelance journalist and food enthusiast.
I know it has not been solicited, but I believe that with my knowledge in writing and my passion for food, my writings would fit really well with your website. I am also willing to provide a fee in exchange for publishing my articles. My goal is to get my name out there and improve my reputation.
Can you please provide your rates for guest posts.
Looking forward to hearing from you!
Best,
Ivan Serrano
Would you know where I could buy Le Parisien salad dressing or have a receipe? It’s the best! Thank you.
In Utah it’s still sold at Costco but other than that I don’t have any information.
HELP! In your ‘Just tomatoes’ Sauce for the Freezer, do you peel the tomatoes or not? Your recipe does not mention that.
No, the tomatoes are not peeled. That’s partly why you need to use a food processor to break them down. (I am puzzled why you didn’t ask this comment on that post though. Then other people could also see it!)
I've been using this site for a long time and love it. One major problem though. I haven't been here in a while. Where is the login button. Where is the My recipes button. All i see is sign-up. I don't want to sign-up. I want access to my recipes. This site has become hard to navigate. Forget about using a smart phone for access. Horrible. Pop ups alone make me want to never use my phone for this site. Please help
Hi Scott,
The Recipe Box feature was provided through Ziplist. Unfortunately they discontinued it on December 10. (There was nothing I could do about it.) You should have received several e-mails from there at the e-mail address you signed up with, and I also posted about it here as well as several times on the Kalyn's Kitchen facebook page. You can read that post here.
We're in the middle of a re-design right now to make the site easier to use on a mobile device, hopefully that will help.
I am not here to infringe on you and your blog. I have made your recipe and tweeked it. Very good. I thought I linked you from it. I wish you would have emailed me. My blog is for me and my friends to read. I use it as a reference and I make no money at all. I do not even have ads on it. I wish you could of been friendly and emailed me.
Tiffany, I am afraid I have no idea what you're referring to. That's because every time I run a report I find hundreds of people copying my recipes and photos in a way that violates my contract. Google penalizes me when so many people copy my stuff, and with so many instances of it happening there is no way I can write personally to each person and discuss it with them.
And you could have written directly to me as well if you really wanted to discuss it.
Kayla, as it says on the board, I only add people who are full time food bloggers.
Hey Kalyn,
I would love to join your Pinterest board http://www.pinterest.com/kalynskitchen/best-slow-cooker-chicken-or-turkey-recipes/
Could you please add me in this board. It would be so kind of yours. My Profile: http://www.pinterest.com/kaylabird103/
Thanks, Kayla
Amy I've only had Mexican vanilla that people have brought back to me from Mexico so I don't have any info about it, sorry.
Where can I get Mexican vanilla & is there a specific name you recommend?
Thank you, Amy
Thank you Christine! Comments like that really make my day.
Hi Kalyn,
I have recently discovered you…and I have to say…I LOVE just about everything you post lol! It's getting to the point that I pin it without perusing the content!
Anyway, just a note to let you know how much I appreciate what you do!
~christine
Tuesday, the cans are 14.5 oz size.
Bob, I don't think I will ever start doing that, as I have over 2,000 recipes and once I do it on newer ones people will expect it on every recipe. I already work hours and hours and hours on every post, so I think if you need that you will have to calculate it yourself. If you look under FAQ there is a link to a site I recommend.
Love your site, do wish that you could post the nutritional breakdown I.e. grams of fat, etc. I'm doing weight watchers and this would be great!
Hi Kalyn… I want to make your sausage and fresh tomatoes marinara sauce recipe but it does not say what size cans for tomato sauce and tomatoes. It looks wonderful and I cannot wait to try it. Can you help me please? Thanks in advance. Tuesday 🙂
Nora, so glad the blog has been helpful!
Hi, I just wanted to say thank you for all the wonderful recipes. I have just had to switch to low carb eating after years of being a carboholic for medical reasons, and thanks to your recipes Im actually enjoying the change!
Janet, this is one of the many things that people have different opinions about. I used a crockery bowl (not plastic) and personally I don't believe it's harmful.
Re your baked cheesy cauliflower tots….it is never recommended to microwave anything which is covered by cling wrap as you say to do with the cut up cauliflower. I know you are all for healthy! This is not! Thank you! Love your site.
Janet
Sorry I somehow missed this comment earlier. I don't have too many salad dressing recipes posted separately from the salads I made with them, but you can find the ones I do have by entering "salad dressing" into the search bar.
Hi Kalyn, I've been following your blog for quite a while and love all your recipes! I think my (and my kids') favorite is your Mexican Baked Eggs. This is my quick "go-to" recipe when I can't think of anything to fix for dinner during the week.
I eat a lot of salads, usually thrown together with whatever we have in the fridge, but I like homemade dressings. Do you have a section that I can just view all your salad dressings? I always like to try new dressings, but don't know which salad recipes to look through to find them.
Thanks for all your fabulous recipes and the hard work you put into this blog!
Diane, I use my phone on the site often to find recipes, but as far reading it daily, there is nothing I know of that will do that. I would have to pay someone lots of money to make the site mobile friendly to make that happen, as far as I know.
Hi Kalyn! I've been a fan of your blog for many years! Thanks for all your hard work!!
Just wondering if anyone could recommend an app that would allow me to read this site on my iphone?
Thanks!!
JoEllyn, thanks for that nice feedback. So glad to hear the site is useful for you!
Kalyn
Just want to share with you that I love your site. We started perusing your site when we decided to do the Low Carb diet. We have since changed it up a bit to the Fast Metabolism diet as a means to incorporate all the things we like in the proper combination. Your site is so multi faceted, it fits all "diets" and lifestyles. Thank you for your commitment. You are one of my top "go to" sites to feed my family a healthy meal.
Hannah, I'm not familiar with that product, but if it says Coconut Milk it will probably work.
Hi Kalyn, I am planning to make your ground turkey/sweet potato stew for dinner tonight .looks amazing! It calls for a can of coconut milk. Can I substitute the coconut milk in a box? It's sold in the supermarket near rice or almond milk. I'm not sure if they are the same thing…thanks far any insight!
Thanks Michelle, glad you are enjoying the recipes.
I just want to thank you for a fantastic food blog! I am a follower of the South Beach Plan and I LOVE your recipes!!!! Thank you Thank you!!
Whatever the problem was, it seems to be working now! Thanks!
Lynn, if you e-mail me (kalynskitchen-AT-comcast-DOT-net) I am happy to send you the recipe.
Lynn, I'm not seeing it, but I can report to my web designer if you tell me what recipe you're on and also what browser you use (FireFox, Internet Explorer, Chrome, or Safari?) Thanks.
Hi! Something wrong with your site. A brown border is covering your pages. Can't see recipe! Anyone else having this issue?
Lisa, welcome!
Just found your blog and all started reading all the recipes and suggestions! Very excited to have found you!!!
Hi Cara,
Glad to hear you are enjoying the blog. Not sure I have any brilliant ideas for snacks, but if you enter "snacks" or "snack" into the google search bar on the blog, you will find a post I wrote about this, as well as any recipe I've mentioned that I eat as a snack. For me, lots of veggies and dip and sugar snap peas, and of course string cheese!
Oh my goodness…I have made so many things from your blog and have pretty much LOVED all of them! I was wondering if you have any ideas on snacks that can be made at the beginning of the week to have throughout the week. I'm a full-time working mom of 2 children and am also taking college courses in order to get my masters degree, so time is not always on my side! You seem to have an abundance of good food ideas so I'm interested in what kind of snacks you indulge in. Thank you!
I just wanted to say how much I LOVE your blog. Your recipes are delicious, easy to follow, and made with interesting ingredients while still being made with things that I can find at my local grocery store. Thank you so much for blogging!
Jenni, the e-mail subscriptions are managed by Feedblitz so I can't make any changes there. But if you want to send me an e-mail telling me what happens when you try to sign up, I can forward it to them.
Hello,
I can't get feedburner to work so I can follow your blog through email. Can you help? I am using a mac. Thanks!
Jenni
Sherry, I have no idea what recipe you are referring to? And truthfully I don't have much experience substituting things for cheese.
Do you have an alternate version of this recipe for those of us who are seriously lactose-intolerant? Milk cooked into a recipe goes through a chemical change that doesn't bother me. But I can't eat anything with cheese cooked into it. Any ideas? Thanks.
Kalyn,
I just stumbled upon this website via Pinterest and I am in heaven. I have yet to make anything, but will start this week, as I will be starting the SB diet. I need to loose a few lbs before a surgery I have coming up. Thank you for creating this website and organizing all the recipes the way you have (by phase). This is a dream come true for me!! Thanks!!
Take care!
I love your meals, it has helped me to try out other stuff instead of the same recipes in the south beach diet books…I lost weight with the south beach diet recipes before but I've put on a little weight and wanted to try new meals has it got a bit boring eating the same thing over and over again…not that south beach diet meals are bad but on phase one, I needed something different to keep me motivated which your meals has….Your'e an inspiration!!
I'm afraid I can't answer that because I don't know anything about how the South Beach Site works (I have never used it.)
Hi Kalyn – wow! I'm on Day 5 of Phase 1 and am loving the SBD so far, and especially, especially the fantastic blog and recipes from you. I had the chicken/red and green cabbage/onion coleslaw tonight for dinner and it was delish!
My question to you is: I know you are not affiliated with SBD. However, is there some way that I can enter the ingredients from one of your recipes onto their site and log it into my journal? I know this is possible with WW but I can't find anywhere to make this happen on SBD.
Thanks again Kalyn – you are amazing!
I just wanted to thank you for all your hard work on this website. I have recently been diagnosed with celiac disease and was searching the internet for gluten free recipes when I stumbled upon your site. i have spent about 5 1/2 hours so far building an arsenal of wonderful, naturally gluten free recipes from your phase one collection. Thank you for being so well organized and helping me reclaim my passion for food, even with the dietary restriction. <3
Hi Lindsey,
I already spend far too much time on the blog, so I am definitely not going to post grocery lists. You can make your own list using the Ziplist Feature though (on the right.) If you need to find ideas for recipes using similar ingredients, just enter the ingredients into the search bar. That's also a good way to find a recipe to use what you have on hand.
HI Kalyn. I love your site! Have you ever done a weekly grocery list for some of your recipes that include similar ingredients? i don't want to buy excessively or waste ingredients when I cannot think of another way to use them, so just wondering if you have ever done anything like that. Thank you!! Let's say goodbye to this baby weight 🙂
Hi Penny,
I'm so glad to hear that the blog has been helpful for you. Thanks for the nice feedback and best wishes for continued good health.
Hi Kalyn,
I just wanted to take a minute and thank you for this wonderful website. I found your site a couple of weeks ago and have used your meals many times since then. I am a colorectal cancer survivor and it has been recommended to eat a low carb, low sugar, high protein diet. Your meals really hit that right on the head. Since I have found your site, I stopped looking elsewhere! Thanks so much for all of the hard work you put into this site. Have a great week! Penny
Hi Sara,
I really know nothing about insulin resistance disorder so I hesitate giving advice to someone who is using the diet for a medical condition. I do recommend thoroughly read the original South Beach Diet book though; I think that will answer most of these questions about things like portion size and what foods are best. Also you might check with your doctor for some of these questions, such as the one about having another snack. Good luck.
Good Morning Kalyn, My name is Sara and live in Pennsylvaia. My doctor recently find out my insulin resistance level was very high and also fatty liver. I started the phase one of South beach baed on my doctor recommendation and I struggle with the recipes. I see here that youhave so many different recipes. I want to know if I canuse your recipes for phase one and what about snacking. Im only eating the suggested snacks in the book. I am actually following only the book recipes and meal plan. what about the portions?? am confused with the portions, do i need to measure everything and also Can i have the suggested snack and latr if I crave for something have a nother snack??? Thanks for your help!!
The only thing I can think of offhand is Roasted Garbanzo Beans. There are a couple of recipes for them on the blog if you use the search box.
Hi am looking for an SBD friendly snack that doesn't spoil so I can leave it in my desk as something to nibble on when I get hungry. no refrigeration required is a necessity.
no nuts please!
Hi Kalyn,
Thank you for your superb blog. I've been eating low GI/SBD-style for some time now but due to some health problems have recently started trying to cut wheat from my diet. Your phase 1 recipes have been a tremendous help to me during this time – the eggplant pizzas were the thing that made me think 'you know what? I can make this wheat-free thing work!'. So a thousand thank yous!
Hi Kalyn – My hubby lost 40 lbs on SBD 10 years ago but has slowly gained it back. Neither of us was too excited about starting over with another 2 weeks of eggs, chicken and zucchini. Since finding your blog we've gone through P1 without feeling deprived – we're just just eating delicious food and we have so many choices. Thanks for all your hard work – tonight we're having chicken (piccata) and zucchini (cheesy baked) but it's so good!
Hi Kayln…Was feeling a bit intimidated about starting on the SB diet, but after finding your website and having a look through all of your thoughtfully selected recipes, my husband and I cannot wait to get started. I'm looking forward to taking control of my diet while being able to try some amazing new recipes. Thanks for taking the time to put together this website.
HI Kalyn! I just recently got back into southbeach diet and your website has certainly made being on this diet so much fun! I was dreading getting back into it (especially phase 1) but your website made every day go by so fast! I can't believe I'm now on Phase 2 Day 9 and absolutely enjoying it! Thank you sooo much and keep those great recipes coming!
Becky, I am so glad to hear you are enjoying the recipes and that they are helping you through Phase One. Thanks for taking time to write!
Kalyn,
I am sure you get many comments and emails on a daily basis, but I just wanted to thank you so much for your blog. My husband and I were on the South Beach diet a few months back, and fell off about around the holidays. We are now back on our second week of phase one. This time around, we are cooking recipes from your blog and never before have we actually enjoyed this phase!!
We have found most of the recipes out there to be unsatisfying leaving us feeling like phase one was basically oppressive and hard to stick with. Your recipes are not only delicious, but help us stick to our diet goals. Who would have ever imagined I could get my husband to eat any green vegetable — let alone KALE!! I don't normally contact the authors of the blogs we use, but yours has been an invaluable tool and I am just so grateful for all of your hard work. This is exactly what we needed.
THANK YOU!
B. Collins – Pennsylvania
There are quite a few salad dressing listed on this page:
Phase One Salads and Salad Dressings
You could probably find more by entering "salad dressing" into the search bar.
I stumbled onto your site by accident when looking for info to restart the SBD. I fell off the wagon and wanted to restart my "new" way of eating and losing weight. I would love some recipes for salad dressings. The store bought ones are so high in sodium, and I have to watch that closely. Any suggestions? I'm not a fan of bleu cheese, but I love ranch and vidalia onion/tomato dressing. Any help would be appreciated.
I started the diet with my daughter two years ago and was doing well, but got busy taking care of my elderly mother and lost my way. My daughter lost 110# and has maintained it for all this time. I'm so proud of her, I want to do the same, and needed something like your blog to get me back on track. Thanks for your dedication. I found many great ideas. Back to salad dressings, any ideas? Thanks, Deb
Catherine, I'm so glad you are enjoying the blog!
I discovered your blog about a month ago, and have been cooking dinner almost exclusively from your recipes for a couple of weeks. My husband wants to lose 20 more pounds (he's lost 40) and I want to lose about 10. We've done South Beach before, and I stumbled upon your blog while doing a google search on SB diet recipes. THANK YOU for having delicious low-glycemic recipes.
I also happen to be a teacher; middle school special ed.
Shari, I make the ranch dressing from the Hidden Valley packets (buttermilk version, low-fat mayo). For Caesar, I love Cardini's Caesar, which is recommended in one of the books. I think most dressings are okay for South Beach as long as there is not more than 2-3 grams of sugar per serving and the fat is olive oil or soybean oil.
Just found your blog and I love the recipes! I've done South Beach in the past and found it to be limiting in terms of cooking for me vs. cooking for the rest of the family. Your recipes seem much more inclusive of the enitre family (so I can just cook one meal for everyone). Do you have any suggestions for healthy (South Beach) versions of ranch or Caesar type salad dressings?
Thank you!!
Loved the recipe for apple cranberry crumble. My suggestion is that after sauteing the apples in a cast iron pan, you put the topping on and put the whole thing in the oven. It's a homey, delicious looking presentation (with less dishes to wash) in the pan. Yum!
Kalyn~ I started again on the South Beach diet on New Years Day. I have already lost 11 pounds. And I have used your site every step of the way. Thank you for all your hard work to make my life a little bit easier.
I can't believe I just found you today!! I am very excited and will visit often. What a terrific job you have done.
Kaylyn, thank you so much. Your wonderful recipes keep me motivated. They are truly taste sensations. Even my picayune naturally skinny husband enjoys htm (as long as I make him some potatoes too). Thank you!
Pat I talk about that in Frequently Asked Questions. I chose South Beach to manage my weight because I didn't want to have to calculate points, carbs, calories, or other information for everything I ate, so people who need that information will have to calculate it on their own.
Why no nutritional info?
Hi Elisheba,
Love your name too! I'm afraid the canning jars header is just symbolic; I mostly freeze the stuff from my garden and wrote a post about that here: How to Freeze Garden Tomatoes, Fresh Herbs, and Vegetables. To find canning tips on a blog, I'd recommend using Food Blog Search.
Hi Kalyn (love your name),
I must admit, your blog is the first blog that I have ever really read and subscribed to. I am loving it! Thanks for taking the time to post such wonderful ideas. I was wondering, since you have pictures of so many canned items on your page, if you talk about how to can food anywhere on here. I am really interested in canned food recipes and how-to's. Thanks again!
Jo-Ann, thanks for telling me. I'll definitely look for it next time I go to Costco. And glad you have enjoyed the blog!
I stumbled across your blog while trying to track down a new supply source for the discontinued Costco Herbed Seafood Rub… and have been coming back to this site since! 🙂
So when I discovered this weekend that Costco has re-launched this product (here in Canada at least…) I thought you'd want to know (and share the news with your readers. It is repackaged in a square plastic spice jar, so its easy to miss on the shelf – but its there! Part # 536707 ($3.99 Cdn for 368g). Its identical to the previous one sold in the round jar previously.
Regards,
Jo-Ann Y., Ontario, Canada
Mary, that sounds like a great idea, thanks!
I love your blog and just printed out the yogurt sauce.
You mention discarding the stem of the dill plant.
I love dill and years ago began saving all the stems, cutting them into pieces and then dried them. I put pieces of them in soups and things that I roast in the oven or crock pot. The more dill flavor I want, the more pieces of stem I use.
Start out with a little until you know how flavorful they can be.

So happy to hear that the blog is helpful for you and that you're enjoying the recipes!
Your Blog ROCKS! Thank you so much for making what I felt was an impossible diet to follow – easy, and appetizing. My husband and I started South Beach just a few days ago. He found your blog and all the great recipes for phase 1 and I must say, it has made our lives so much easier. Half the battle of a diet is how it fits with your lifestyle. You have made that fit perfect synergy. I adapted the breakfast casserole to fit our likes, and breakfast is now a no-brainer. I have the coconut macaroons in the over now and can't wait to have a couple for dessert tonight. Keep up the great blog and you have made this easy as pie (sugar-free, no carb of course!). – Sincerely, soon to be smaller – AG
Sweeps99, I don't have a cookbook and even though I've had offers to write one, it's not something I'm planning to do at this time. Cookbooks are a huge amount of work for the money you make, and I can barely keep up with my blog. Thanks for the vote of confidence though. If I change my mind, I'll definitely annouce it on the blog.
I was wondering if I am missing something. Do you have your own cookbook to purchase? If so can you post a link. If not, are you planning on doing one? I would love to have one. Thank you for all your hard work and delicious recipes.
Best Regards
Sorry but I am not diabetic so I don't know anything about calculating glycemic load.
As a diabetic I feel that the glycemic LOAD is more important than the glycemic index. It deals with insulin resistance and is the real issue most diabetics have issues with. Is there any way to have recipes or foods in your recipes calculate the glycemic load?
David I have a post about How to Make Grilled Chicken Breasts that are Juicy Every Time that might be helpful. You can use the search bar to find other ideas for grilled chicken.
my name is david from katy tx.Im a hard wood cooker. And i have fifty ladies to grill chicken for. Im looking for the best way to to keep the chicken moist
Chanie, that's not something I'm qualified to give advice about, but I do think Phase One can get pretty boring after a few weeks. The purpose of the other phases is to transition to a way of eating you can stick with for the long haul.
Hi Im new to south beach Ive finished one week I lost 4 lbs and Im happy should I go to phase 2 after 2 weeks or continue for alittle longer my total weight lose should be 30 lbs
Sarah, no grains are allowed for phase one.
Tabatha, it is still there, the second one down on the Home page. The best thing to do when you're looking for a certain recipe is to enter the ingredients into the search bar. Here is the Jicama and Carrot Slaw.
I saw a recipe yesterday for slaw with carrots, jicama, and radishes, but I cannot find it today. Please help.
Tabatha
Shelley, so glad you are enjoying the blog. And anyone who likes Fine Cooking has got to be a good cook, in my opinion!
My daughter discovered your blog while trying to find a chocolate cookies recipe. Since then I've tried your spicy sweet potato fries and the napa cabbage salad with radishes, sugar snaps, etc. Both were fabulous! Tonight I'm trying your quinoa recipe and want to fix your minestrone soup with barley.
Keep up the great work – so fun to find a new recipe site!
P.S. I like Fine Cooking Magazine too – my favorite.
Joni, I haven't used Chervil, but if you enter it in the search box you will find a few links to other sites who have used it.
Hi,
Nice site 😉 Have you tried any recipes with Chervil yet?
joni
Quite honestly, I have no idea if that would be phase one, but I kind of doubt it.
Hi Kalyn,
I'm on day three of Phase One. Doing well. Question is flax meal ok for phase one? wouldn't it be considered a carb. I saw a recipe for flax bread that is just Flax meal and oil and eggs. What say you?
thanks
Svelte in Seatle..(almost) 🙂
I can't post comments where people leave an e-mail address. Just clarifying that in case someone wonders why their comment didn't show up.
Elizabeth, thanks! Glad you are enjoying the food. I haven't seen that show (don't have Food Network, lol) and have no plans to do menus though. I can barely keep up with posting recipes!
Kalyn! I've been meaning to thank you for months now. Your recipes have made my family love me a little bit more 🙂 lol The stir fry green beans with pine nuts are a big hit (made at least once a week) as well as the garlic roasted broccoli. Simple and ah-maze-inggg! My 2 year old can hardly wait for his veggies to cook anymore! I also love the west african peanut stew!! I don't know what made me try it, but I am so glad I did. I keep all those ingredients in the pantry in case I have no time to really throw down in the kitchen. You know, speaking of which, have you thought about doing some weekly menus or mentioning how to freeze the meal? I like how Robin Miller (food network) integrates a staple ingredient into the weekly schedule. I've been meaning to try something like that out (not yet sure about the once a month cooking scenario). I would never ask to take any time away from you posting recipes (I'd suffering without em!) Although I would love to hear your take on that and perhaps give me some encouragement and guidance! Either way I'll be back!
Thank you Kalyn! ILY 🙂
XOXO
your fan from Germany
Thanks so much; I'm so happy to hear that.
Hi Kalyn,
Just wanted to say a huge thank you for all your wonderful recipes. Haven't tried one yet that I didn't love. It makes it so much easier to eat healthy.
Please keep up the great work!
This is a reply to the anonymous person who left the links here to an organization which has reportedly "banned" agave nectar. I am not posting your comment, because after about 10 minutes of internet research I came to the conclusion that this is not a legitimate organization, despite their slick-looking websites (all of which link back and forth in an endless loop to each other.) I don't find any mention of this organization in legitimate discussions on the web about the glycemic index, not even on Wikipedia or The World's Healthiest Foods, both of which have a long list of sources for Glycemic Index research. Doesn't that seem a bit odd for an "Internationally Accredited Testing and Certification Organization" that is "Approved by International Governments, including the United States Government." In fact, the longer you click around on their site you will see that every link leads to another version of their slick website, without a single name on the contact page.
As for my own opinion regarding agave nectar, I continue to believe that it is safe for most people, particularly in the very small amounts that I use it in my recipes. For persons with diabetes or other blood sugar issues, I recommend you consult your doctor if you have questions about using it.
Good luck to you in your weight loss efforts. I know South Beach will work if you stick with the plan.
Dear Kayln,
I just wanted to thank you for your blogs. I need to lose weight and not sure what plan to use. My neighbor say to try South Beach. I'm not a cook but must learn to change my life style and when goggling, I found your site. There as so many recipes I would like to try. Seeing all them on your site seems that this is a do able life style. Thanks for all the work you have put into it.
Your are a sainted person to do this site! We love soup and didn't think we could have it much on SBD phase 1 but i just printed a bunch of your wonderful recipes and am going to make soup right now!!! thank you so very much – your efforts are gonna keep us on the diet and we WILL LOSE WEIGHT!!!!!
Thanks Tammy!
I don't know if you tried entering "ground turkey cilantro" into the search box, but that's the easiest way to see if a recipe is on the site. I can't think of any recipe I've posted that used ground turkey, cilantro, and mayo however, and I'm sure I haven't posted a wrap with those ingredients. Could it have been these Turkey Lettuce Wraps and maybe you added some mayo?
You had a recipe for ground turkey with cilantro mayonaise in a wrap. Can't find it
Help
Finally a site worth visiting for us on the southbeach diet!!!!!! yay!!!!!
Thanks for letting me know you're enjoying the blog. If you read the Frequently Asked Questions, I talk about why I don't provide nutritional information. I do tell how many servings I think it makes on each recipe, but it's not precise because South Beach doesn't limit servings on most foods and there is no idea how much would be a serving for you.
Hi Kayln! First of all I want to say I use your website almost every time i cook and absolutely love it! But is there any way you could post how many calories are in a serving of one of your dishes and what the serving size is? I would really appreciate it. Or how can I figure that out on my own
Hello Kalyn, I recently started Southbeach to kick those last "baby" pounds and I am so incredibly thankful for you and your blog! Thank you, a thousand times, for helping me put together my menu every week and for enabling me to lose the 10lbs I've lost in the last 4 weeks!
To show my appreciation… I'm passing along this recipe that a girlfriend recently introduced me to. It is a sauce that I use as a salad dressing and it is so fabulous! I pour it atop a bowl of cooked cold kidney beans, chopped raw broccoli, spinach, cilantro, grated carrot and dollop of sour cream.
1/2 cup oil (I used light olive oil)
1/2 cup almonds
1/3 cup brewers yeast
1/3 cup garbanzo beans – drained
1/4 cup soybeans
1/2 cup water
1/2 cup lemon juice
2 garlic cloves
1/2 tsp salt
1 tsp curry powder
Blend nuts, garlic, beans and oil in food processor. Then blend in yeast and liquids one at a time. Puree until smooth. Voila!
Again, Thank you!
Sincerely,
Stephanie Vigil
Thank you Lisa. I appreciate the kind thoughts.
I have lurked around your web for several years — and sometimes am quite serious about being SBD faithful — and always enjoy your recipes.
I was saddened to read that you lost your father and wish you peace and comfort as you and your family move forward sustained with love and memories. Create more!
Sending hugs and warm wishes.
Lisa
Hi Kalyn,
So sorry for your loss. It is always hard to lose a parent … especially one who was obviously so respected and loved. May you and your LARGE family find comfort in one another sharing your fond memories of your father/grandfather/great grandfather.
Hugs to you all,
One of your newest Blog Followers,
Kathy
Kathy, so glad you are enjoying the blog; congrats on the 5 pounds!
Hi Kalyn,
I too (like so many others), am so happy to have found your blog!! I've lost weight before on the SBD and like it, but found myself eating the same things over and over and getting bored. Now that I've found your amazing site I don't think that will happen this time! I've been back on the diet a week and have already lost 5 lbs. trying many of your delicious recipes. Two of my favorites were the Asian Lettuce Wraps and Amy's White Chicken Chili … but I have seen many more I want to try. I have two boys getting married this year and have good motivation to loose weight, but having found your site I hardly feel like I'm on a diet!!
I'm spreading the word and telling all my friends about discovering you too!!
Thanks, Kathy
Pat you're very welcome, glad you liked it!
Thank you for your frozen tomato sauce recipe. It seems simple and that's what I like!! I'm 71 and my canning days are over. And, there aren't a ton of ingredients. Most of the recipes I found were for "spaghetti sauce" and yours is just plain ol' tomato sauce. Again, my sincere thanks.
Amy glad you like the blog. I am happy to hear you read the book, and I promise you, this diet will work if you stick to it. Happy cooking!
I just started South Beach and am thrilled to find your blog! After reading the book, I was still wondering what on earth I was going to eat every day. Now I know! Thanks so much. — Amy
Kate, I'm glad you enjoying the blog. Thanks for all the nice feedback.
Kalyn,
I LOVE LOVE LOVE your site! I can not even tell you how excited I was to find it. My husband and I did southbeach 2 years ago after I had my first baby, and were very successful at it. (75 pounds total!) Now after baby number 2, we need to get back into it. I do have to admit when we started it last time, that I was very discouraged by the recipes that I had found. I love to cook, and not being able to find variety, and good recipes was the hardest part for me. I have all the southbeach cookbooks, I made up a lot of my own last time, and found a few good ones on other sites, but nothing like what you have! I almost ran out of ink printing the recipes that I want to try! We may even be able to go on 4 weeks of phase 1 with no problem! Your pictures are amazing, and your so descriptive! I love how you put your own little hints in the recipes. I wish that I would have found this website 2 years ago. It would have been a lot easier to stay on track for a lifetime! Thank you so much for your hard work! This site is a MUST HAVE for any southbeacher!
I have signed up for your E-mails and look forward to them, and to trying all the recipes that I have printed!
I do actually have just one question… you mentioned in one of your posts that you were going to message someone about the black bean brownie recipe… I found that in the new cook book that southbeach has.. Did you have a bad opinion of it or something? Just wondering, cause that is one thing that my husband really misses, and wondered how there were..
Thanks again, and keep the recipes coming! You are awesome!
Kate

G, welcome and good luck on the diet this time around. I hope the blog will be useful for you!
Hi and Happy New Year!
I lost 30 pounds a few years back and I wish I had known about your site! I am back on South Beach with my daughter and I am so excited to try some of your great recipes. Your site has inspired me!
thanks so much!
G the lunch Lady!!!!
Jennette has now re-coded the search bar so I would love to know if that has fixed the issue for you; thanks!
Thanks for the nice feedback about the site. I will forward this to my web designer, but I think she will need to know what browser and operating system you're using to be able to duplicate the problem. I'm hoping you'll come back and leave that information. I'm puzzled because I use the search bar myself all day long and haven't had any problems.
Hello,
I love your website, and honestly use it several times a week. In fact, I've referred it to many of my friends, and they too love it. In the past I could easily search your site, but since the change, whether I'm using a Mac or a PC, I can't type in your search field. Is there something I'm not doing or that I need to download to make it work again. I do love your site and miss that option. Thank you for your time.
Thanks Bonnie. That's one of the features I couldn't have with my old template and I really liked it on other blogs.
I LOVE the new section on your blog, after each recipe, that tells me other recipes I might like. I know this will be SO helpful!
Thank you, but I'm chuckling! (You should look back in the archives and see some of my earlier food photos. I'm slowly trying to re-take them but there are still some pretty dismal ones left!)
But interesting ingredients and simple preparation methods is always my goal! Easy is good!
Wow, everything you make is so beautiful. And even better, not too complicated of a recipe! I am inspired and plan on trying many of your recipes. Thanks so much!
Patsy, in the right sidebar about 1/3 way down is a section that says "Subscribe Here." You can put in your e-mail address and the blog will come to your e-mail every time I update.
Enjoy that swiss chard; I just picked the very last of mine a few days ago!
Hi Kalyn,
I grow a lot of vegetables (I live in FL), and have all this swiss chard that I've never cooked before. I just found your blog, and love it! I won't ever throw away the swiss chard stems again!
Now, please tell me, how can I have your blog delivered to my mail box every day (or whenever you post it)?
I couldn't find a place to do that.
Thanks!
Patsy
Mary, just in case you check back here if you e-mail me (kalynskitchen at comcast dot net) I'll tell you why I'm not publishing your comment with the black bean brownies link.) Didn't want you to think I was just ignoring you.
Mary Ann, I wish I could tell you more, but it was nearly 7 years ago that I first started the diet, and it's a bit foggy in my memory. I know that I lost about 35 pounds fairly quickly, but it took me nearly a year to lose those last 7 pounds (although I may not have been trying as hard as I could!) I probably did Walk Away the Pounds at least a few times a week, because I've been doing that for quite a few years. I have been eating this way ever since then (with some splurges for holidays and special occasions.) My weight fluctuates up and down about 5-7 pounds but I never let it get much higher than that. If it does, I go back to phase one for a few weeks.
Good luck with the diet. I know it will work if you stick with it!
What a lovely collection of recipes – thank you! I'm in Phase One of South Beach and would love to know more about your personal experience with this diet. You lost 42 pounds which is about the same amount I'd like to lose. Besides following the Diet, what else did you do? How long did it take you to lose that weight?
Fran, how fun hearing from you. It sounds like you're well on the way to more healthful eating. Glad the job is turning out to be a good resource for you.
Dear Kalyn!
I know you get hundreds of messages, but I still wanted to tell you how grateful I am that you made this blog and post all those incredible ideas! Just very recently my cousin inspired me to try the SBD, I had never heard of it. Although I am a doctor (and you should think we learned about nutrition and how the body reacts to different foods in med school…….) I really have tried to figure out how I can eat, not be hungry, and not keep gaining weight. And although I tried a kind-of freestyle Weight Watchers some years back (and lost about 35 pounds), I gained it all back when I started to work in a hospital where it was really stressful, and I was eating all kinds of crap on the go, just to survive from sugar-low to sugar-low. Now I finally understand the carb mechanism! What an insight. As I am eating only very little meat (due to having a kosher kitchen where it is rather difficult to just quickly make some turkey breast, as it involves a lot of rearranging and cleaning etc) I needed to really dig into lowfat cheese and eggs. Your egg-recepies are a revelation! In fact, I just pulled the breakfast casserole with asparagus and mushrooms out of the oven. And just now tried your method of hard-boiling eggs (it works! They are perfect!)
The egg muffins have worked really well, too, and provided lunch for a week.
I also tried a sweet variety of the egg muffins: Used some rhubarb (vegetable Phase 1!), sweetened it with stevia (guess you could use splenda), and mixed some ricotta and ground nuts with the eggs. Not bad.
So far, I hated diets, as they always mean to be hungry, hungry, hungry. Not anymore! I am really curious to see how much weight I can lose on this feast… According to the SBD book I might be a little more challenged, as I am a "pear" and not an "apple", but hey, with your recipes to add variation and provide inspiration, it should not be all that much of a problem.
Thank you thank you thank you!
Greetings from Switzerland, my current home (where you don't get Spike, although I like it and use it when I am in the US 🙂 )
Fran
Ana, sorry but I've never heard of that bread. I'd try google and if it's posted online it should come up.
Dear Kalyn,
Do you have a recipe for Kneaders wonderful Pumpkin Bread?
Thanks a lot,
Ana
Trulie, it does sound good!
I love your blog! I came up with another stuffed mushroom recipe. Check it out, and I would love your feedback. I am on Phase 1 so I guess desperation leads me to invention. 🙂 Is this good?

Kim, I appreciate the vote of confidence, but I don't think that's something I'd ever want to do. (I don't even plan out my own meals for more than a day at a time, if that!)
I can barely keep up with the blog, and I'm not an expert in the diet either, so I don't know that I'm qualified to make those kinds of recommendations.
I love your recipes and have tried several and my husband and I have really enjoyed them. My question is, have you ever thought about creating an online meal plan? I am trying to lose weight and because I am eating a totally different way than from how I was raised, I am useless when it comes to thinking of ideas in the kitchen. I have seen "2 weeks" meal plans in diet books, but they include recipes for meals I would not be able to find ingredients for or stuff I would not eat. Your recipes are easy to make and I can find items at my local grocery store. I know what you are thinking- "Another blog! What!! I don't have time for this one!" LOL!! Do you have any suggestions? Thanks again!
Kim
Thanks Holly. It always makes me happy to know the blog is useful for someone. If you have good recipe ideas, always love to see them.
Hi Kalyn,
I just want to say how incredibly impressed I am with you, your dedication and your blog… way to go, my friend! Thank you for what you are doing each day to help so many. I am currently helping a friend who was diagnosed with Type2 diabetes and although I am a product of heathy choices, healthy eating and a life in the the restaurant business, it's nice to know I have a "friend" I can turn to when I need help and new ideas.
I have a few recipes of my own I may send to you that I think you'd have fun with. Thanks again for being there, your blog is out of this world!
Holly
It sounds like you'll need to use the search bar and recipe index to find recipes that either don't contain dairy or things (like breakfast casseroles) where the cheese can be left out. I know there is a post on snacks (which you can find by entering "snacks" into the search bar.) As for desserts, the only suggestions I have are the ones listed in the index. (Sorry, but I don't have time to find recipes and give personal suggestions about what people should eat; that's why I've spent many hours making the recipe index easy to use.)
Good luck! The diet will work if you stick with it; I'm sure of that.
Hi Kalyn, My husband and I will be starting SB diet.I am trying to get recipes that don't have any milk (breakfast).Snacks are a huge problem as cheese tends to be a big choice.Any suggestions, other than what's in the SB diet book? Also any suggestions on how to make it from after dinner to bedtime without going crazy.Could use some suggestions for desserts (no milk). Thanks for all your hard work, this makes me hopeful that we can actually succeed at this diet.
Amy you're welcome! Good luck with the diet; I know it will work if you stick with it.
Kalyn,
I just started SBD and we both need to lose at least 150 pounds. I am so thrilled with all the recipe suggestions on your site. I have been reading through and am signed up for the daily feeds!
Thank you for making it much, much easier to follow SBD.!
Amy
Laura, thanks!
Hi Kalyn,
I did not beat the egg whites before adding to the rest of the mixture although I guess if they were beaten first it would add a bit more volume to the mixture and may make for a lighter cookie. I would substitute cinnamon and maybe a touch more splenda in place of the cinnamon dolce syrup. The syrup has a hint of caramel flavour as well – I'm not sure what would be best to replicate that though….
I found the comments section! All, I found this blog while trying to find a decent recipe for Tzatziki sauce and I LOVE it! I'm an aspiring vegan (current vegetarian) and there are so many great recipes on here! I'll be chiming in from time to time I guess. Ciao.
Just trim the basil like I described in the post, but cut off the flowers and throw them away, then chop up the basil leaves with olive oil and freeze.
Hi,
What happens when basil flowers. I have tried to pick the flowers off. I would like to try to freexe it, but what do I have to do?
This recipe looks interesting. Are the egg whites beaten? (Also I'm wondering what to substitute for the Starbucks syrup, since I don't have that.)
Hi Kalyn,
Your blog is fantastic! I love the huge variety of South Beach recipes (and all the wonderful photos that go with them). I took some inspiration from your sugar free flourless cookie recipes and did some baking today. I just wanted to pass on the recipe I ended up putting together if you are looking for another addition to your already great south beach dessert recipes:
Almonds ½ cup
Walnuts 1 cup
Almond butter 1/2 cup
Splenda – ½ cup
Baking Powder – 1 tsp
Vanilla extract – 1 tsp
Egg whites – 3 tbsps
Starbucks cinnamon dolce syrup (sugar free) – 1 tbsp
Grind nuts in food processor then combine with other ingredients and mix well. Form into balls and press down with back of spoon. Bake at 350 degrees for 18 minutes.
I haven't come up with any phase one breakfasts without eggs, but there are some ideas from readers in the comments on the archive page for Eggs and breakfast Dishes.
I'm going to start the SB diet with a friend and she has trouble with eggs (they don't agree with her). Is there anything else she can eat for breakfast during Phase 1?
Kalyn-Thank you! I've just started South Beach…I can't wait to try so many of the ideas you have posted.
Larry, I haven't ever made avocado stuffed with crab, but I remember having it once on a cruise. When I'm looking for recipes I always use Food Blog Search. You might check there and see what you find.
I'm new to Facebook and also blog posting so I may not be doing this right. I tried to find a way to post a question on your Facebook wall, to no avail.
In any case, I saw your recipe for the tuna stuffed avocado. That reminded me of when I used to live in Jacksonville, Florida about 22 years ago. There was a restaurant near the intercoastal waterway (no longer there) that served crab stuffed avocado. I have never run across these before. This was SO delicious I've never forgotten it. I'm trying to remember what all it had in it, but in addition to the fresh crab there were several tasty ingredients, all served in two avocado halves. I know this sounds crazy but I almost think it might have included pineapple, though that doesn't *sound* like it would be a good combination. Have you ever run across a good recipe for avocado stuffed crab? I would really like to have one!
Dear Kalyn,
Thank you for such a well-organized blog to help SBD-dieters, without compromising on delicious food ideas. I am a total foodie, and just started Phase One. Finding your site means that I will hopepully be able to stick with the diet, as I really do love food.
Jean, sorry, but I don't know anything about these bars. You might try comparing the nutritional information with the South Beach Diet bars made by Kraft and see if they're comparable.
Hi Kalyn,
I love your blog. I need more fiber in my diet, especially when it comes to snacks. Have you heard about GNU bars and would they be considered South Beach friendly.
I chose the South Beach Diet to manage my weight because I didn't want to count calories, carbs, or weight-watchers points, so people who want to know the nutritional information will have to calculate it themselves. I think there are some sites online where you can input the ingredients and number of servings and it will calculate for you.
Kalyn,
Is there any way to figure out the nutritional content of these recipes?
Anonymous, your question makes me wonder whether you've read the South Beach Diet book. I don't count carbs, and the diet doesn't really recommend it. The main thing about this diet is learning what foods are allowed, and then planning menus and knowing what foods to eat is relatively easy. You can get the book from the library if you don't want to buy it; I do recommend reading it.
Hi Kalyn,
I love your recipes and ideas, however my biggest problem is figuring out a menu for the day and what side dishes would compliment my breakfast, lunch and dinner. Also, how many carbs do you allow yourself per day?
I'm on vacation so this will be a quick reply, but for easy recipes check the Easy South Beach Recipes category. There is also an index for phase one.
I have recently started the SB diet oer doctors orders. I have PCOS and I am trying to lose some weight to hepl get pregnant. I bought the SB diet book, "Super charged" and Though it has a day by day guid for phase one….I simply could not eat 5 out of the 10 recipes. So I have been on phase One for almost three weeks because I keep falling off the wagon. Not in a terrible way where I am eating chocolate fudge and pizza. But sneaking in some creamer in my coffee and using 2% milk versus 1%.
I was starving for 1 1/2 weeks because I could not find any good recipes online, that is until I found your blog. I am scanning your blog all night to create a shopping list for the store tomorrow.
Thank GOD I found your blog. It may be the one website that could keep me on this diet. I cannot afford to keep this weight on any longer. I have yet to have any success in 3 weeks. Not a single pound lost. But, I have to give it time.
I just wanted to say thank you for creating such a wonderful well laid out blog. Also I would like to say as a fellow photog, I think all your photo's are simply beautiful!
If you have any suggestions on some easy recipes for phase one….please by all means.
[email protected]
Teresa, sorry but I don't have any sausage recipes that I can think of (and I can't take recipe requests on the blog, that's something I could NEVER keep up with.) If I was you, I'd check Food Blog Search. Just type in sausage recipe and I bet there are plenty of them.
Hi, Kalyn, I am looking for a good sausage recipe. Everything in the store has preservatives, sugar or high fructose corn syrup. Turkey breakfast sausage or even pork would do. Something south beach appropriate would be great. Thanks, Teresa
Anonymous, I do think quinoa is kind of confusing since it's a seed and not technically a grain. For a while I thought it might be okay for phase one, but then I did read somewhere that it's not allowed until phase two. Sorry, I can't remember where I read that but I would recommend saving it for phase two.
Super Blog Kalyn. I'm really looking forward to trying out your recipes. I am planning on starting SB again (I did it years ago prior to being diagnosed with CD). While searching the net for phase 1 SB + gluten free I was sent to another website which has a recipe with quinoa in it for Phase 1. I thought grains were not allowed in phase 1. Could you please clear this up for me.
Thanks.
Sarah, thanks for the nice feedback about the blog. I'm afraid I've never made sugar-free candy. If I was looking for a recipe like that, I might try Food Blog Search:
http://foodblogsearch.com
Kalyn,
This blog is wonderful! You have so many yummy recipes on here that makes this diet easy. Anyone can find variety to make this diet fun using your site.
I have a question for you. Have you ever made any sugar free candy? I am looking for a recipe to make my hubby some fudge or chocolate for Valentine's day that he will be able to enjoy. So far the recipes I have come across have too many carbs or people's comments make it sound unappetizing. If you have any suggestions, I'd love to hear them!
~Sarah
Elaine, you're welcome. Hope you will enjoy the blog.
I am thrilled to have found your blog! Cooking is my favorite hobby, but since I was diagnosed as pre-diabetic last year I've been on a long hunt for an online source of recipes that are both good for me and good for my taste buds. Thanks for your work here!
Berta, good luck on the diet.
I'm not sure what is making you think the Ham and Cabbage Soup might be phase one, because it says this in the recipe:
"With all the healthful and low-glycemic cabbage, this soup is a great choice for the South Beach Diet, although it would be phase two with the carrots. I think this would still be great without carrots if you wanted to make it for phase one though, maybe adding some chopped celery or even more onion. "
The zucchini muffins say WHITE WHOLE WHEAT. This is a type of whole wheat flour that's light in color. You're right that white flour isn't recommended.
I am new to SB second week of Phase one.Ten lbs gone IMAGINE!
This is the most amazing site I have found and I've been searching for over a week now. THANK YOU! It is now in my FAVORITES!
I was wondering about the Ham cabbage and red pepper soup recipe. I didn't think carrots were on Phase One? I haven't recieved my book yet, so I have been following the SB plan from the Internet.
Also on the zuchinni muffins it says can also use white flour are we allowed white flour ever?
Again THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR HELPING US ALONG THE WAY!
Berta
The latest book says to limit cream cheese (fat free or light) to 2 T per day, so probably that should be saved for phase two. I actually didn't realize that until I just looked it up, so now I'm going to check my cheesecake recipes!
I'm not a fan of fat free products because they often have added sugar to replace the fat. When you buy dairy products, check the label and make sure it doesn't have more sugar than the reduced fat variety.
Kalyn, My husband has just started on SB and I'm trying to make good things for him. I made the cheesecake with ricotta. Is there a reason not to use Fat Free Cream cheese instead of ricotta? I've made sugar free, fat free cheesecakes and there yummy.
Southern Girl, that's fantastic! Thanks for sharing your success with us. I'm glad the blog has been helpful, but all credit goes to YOU!
3 years ago January 1st I joined a group of co workers in a diet challenge .SBD was the one chosen to follow .I was the most sceptical
of the diet and would it work?50 pounds off I won the contest and loved the foods and never went hungry ! Your blog has helped with new recipes and ideas to keep the weight off and my husband happy with a variety of foods. Thanks for your time on this site!
Mary, thanks. So glad you enjoyed the cookies. I loved them too.
Kalyn
The whole grain chocolate cookies are delicious! I was looking for a cookie like this and am so glad you had it today. I did use white whole wheat, 1/4 cup light brown sugar and 1/4 cup regular sugar instead of the Splenda, walnuts in place of the pecans and dark cocoa.
Thanks for a "keeper",
Mary
Hi Kalyn
The Pistachio Cookie recipe reminded me "The Heart-Healthiest Chocolate Chip Cookies in the World" recipe printed in Vegetarian Times magazine Feb 09. Due to readers' positive respose it was reprinted again in the magazine Nov/Dec 09 issue. Ground walnuts are used in place of eggs and butter and instead of flour, uses a blend oat flour and rolled oats. The cookies are delicious so I am looking forward to trying these Pistacio cookies as well. Thanks for all the great recipes you post.
Anonymous, olive oil has many uses in cooking, so it's different in each recipe. In some recipes it could certainly be cut down, like the roasted vegetables, but I think without any oil at all the food will stick to the pan. If you have a way to solve that, try it without the oil. In salad dressings and marinades I think you could substitute stock or fruit juice for olive oil in some cases, but it's not something I've experimented with. Good luck.
Hi Kalyn, Your blog is truly remarkable and helpful on so many levels for a beginning cook like myself. As with most folks, I've been recommended by my doctor to follow a more healthful eating style and his guidelines are very similar to south beach – just a bit more restrictive to fit my needs. So I have a general question – a lot of your recipes use olive oil, and if not for that one ingredient, the recipes would meet the criteria. A specific example is Roasted Broccoli with Lemon and Percorino-Romano Cheese -do you have a suggestion as to what one could substitute when that ingredient is called for? I can't use any oils – peanut, canola etc. in cooking. In general is olive oil used as flavoring or simply as a binding for other ingredients? I appreciate any hints you can provide.
Jen, Glad to hear you are having success and enjoying the blog. The information I've seen says limit it to 1/2 avocado per day.
hey! i love this place of yours…i stumbled upon it about a week ago while searching for some awesome, healthy recipes…which i found! 🙂 good job btw, you've contributed to a week of amazing suppers at my house…needless to say, i'm nearing the end of my very first 'official' day on SB. it's ridiculous how excited i am about it cause it's promising for weight-loss but more importantly, so good for your body on the inside too. i feel incredibly strong urges to discuss it with anyone who crosses my path…however, i mostly manage to control myself.
anyway, there's a point to this comment and it is that although there are recipes in the book that include avocados, there is no real discussion on them. i assume they're acceptable…but i'm unsure and as we are huge fans, i don't want to sabatoge our first phase by overdoing it.
if you could let me know, i'd totally appreciate it. and again, you're doing such an incredible job. i appreciate finding such a wonderful site…blog? whatever it is, i like it.
Misshotrod, thanks so much for writing. I'm so glad to hear that the blog has been helpful to you (those kinds of stories make my day!)
Kalyn,
I wanted to start South Beach for years but thought Phase 1 would be too difficult. Then one day just by chance I found your website. I know this sounds silly but I cried. It was just the right time for me to find this. I'm am not cooking savy at all especially with herbs and vegetables. I have printed & tried many recipes and I have lost 8 lbs in 3 weeks. I am now on Phase 2 and find I'm missing Phase 1. You have helped me more than words can express. I just wanted to let you know how much you are appreciated.
By the way, my favorite recipe is your Cauliflower Au Gratin with Sharp Cheddar Cheese & Parmesan. OMG, it is the bomb.
Thank you a million times and I wish you & your family the best holidays ever.
Misshotrod
Mindymom, Bon Appetit is a spice blend. In the U.S. I use McCormick brand, which you might be able to find online. The ingredient list on the bottle says "salt, MSG, celery seed, and onion." I've also used something called Beau Monde seasoning, which has a similar flavor. If you can't find those, I'd just grind together some salt, celery seed, and dried onion and it would be very close.
Hi Kalyn
Great site – thank you. I am from Australia and having difficulty with one of your recipes. It asks for 2tbs of "bon appetit"? Is this a condiment? Can you describe what's in it?
Thank you.
Hi Nathan,
I'm doing great, thanks for asking! I am loving being home so I have more time to cook and take photos for my blog. I do miss the kids some though.
I bet you and Bill are the two smartest kids in that math class, no doubt about it!
Hi, Mrs. Denny. This is Nathan king and I just want to ask how you are doing. can you belive it?! I am in JUNIOR HIGH!! JUNIOR HIGH!!! I am in seventh grade. Bill and me are in Algebra together.
Desirae, I'm not a fan of Sweet Potato Pie, but you could adapt a recipe using Splenda or even Brown Sugar-Splenda blend. I do love this recipe for Soy Glazed Sweet Potatoes. They're actually fairly sweet and don't really taste much like soy sauce, just slightly salty.
Hey I love your site and have been snagging recipes since I found it. Well the holidys are coming up and I can't find any healthy sweet potato pie recipes, I thought I would since sweet potatoes are SB approved… any ideas?
Anonymous, thanks for the nice feedback. I've never seen anything about plantains, but I'd guess eat very sparingly, same as bananas, which is one of the few fruit that says "limited" in the small guidebook.
Hi Kalyn,
I love your blog and get tremendous compliments whenever I make your recipes for events.
I was wondering what the South Beach Diet says about plantains. I didn't locate any on your website and haven't been able to determine if they are acceptable for Phase 2. Any thoughts would be helpful.
Thanks,
Anonymous, there never never been any Sushi recipes posted here. I have written about some sushi restaurants though. You could enter "sushi" in the search bar and see if one of those looks familiar.
hey I recently found a sushi recipe on this site that calls for salmon, cream cheese, dill, sesame seeds to name a few. However, I cant find the link anymore if someone could post the link to that recipe Id greatly appreciate it.
Great site and I was so happy to find this as I start The South Beach Diet. I have printed many of your recipes and have bookmarked the site. Thanks so much for maintaining the site and taking time to answer questions.
Kalyn, your blog has been instrumental in getting me through the first phase of South Beach! The recipes in the book are so bland which makes it difficult to get through the 2 weeks. Thank you for your blog!! I've sent your blog to so many people I know who are thinking about South Beach but are discouraged by phase 1. Thank you, thank you!! Keep up the amazing work!!!
Hi Kalyn,
Thank you so much for devoting your time to this great website!! I love Sunset Magazine's recipes, and have a few good cookbooks, but your selection is so comprehensive and all on one site!! Gourmet here I come!! Much appreciation, YA-Glendale, CA.
Kalyn, Thanks so very much for your website and blog. My husband and I are starting South Beach on Monday and thanks to you I have all my delicious recipes ready. I am sure the diet will be a success for us, in large part due to your fantastic recipes!!!
Street Talk and anonymous, thanks for the nice feedback. It means a lot to me.
i just wanted to say how great this site is. I am quite the foodie and am not easily impressed with recipies but everything i have tried from this site has been great. bravo keep it up
Just found your blog! Wow! I especially like the real easy recipes! Thank you for sharing all you have learnt with us!
Tammy, you're welcome. Glad you like the blog, and good luck on the diet!
I am so happy to have found this blog. I did the South Beach Diet a few years ago and had good results, but did not continue and now, at 45 I am ready to try it again, and was searching for new recipes when I ran across your blog and I am just thrilled and can't wait to get started. I have always been a Monday dieter—-you know the one who always goes on a two day weekend binge so she can just add more weight to lose when she finally starts her diet on Monday? That is me. Not any longer. After spending some time looking at your recipes, I am starting tomorrow—on a Saturday!! Can't wait and I thank for you recipes that are real food. God bless you.

Cira, thanks. I'm sorry to say, not one single recipe with plums on the blog that I can think of.
I bet you could find some good ones on other blogs by searching Food Blog Search. It searches over 3,000 food blogs. Good luck! I'll keep my eye out for plum recipes.
I am a BIG fan of yours. I would like to know if you have any recipes with plums. My tree has produced over 40 pounds of plums this year 🙂 Looking for entrees ( not neccessarily desserts)
What a fabulous blog. You’ve done a great service here for so many folks trying to keep the weight off. Glad I found you when I searched “roasted brussel sprouts” the other night! BTW they were delicious.

Joanne, glad you are enjoying the blog. I’m not familiar with that cereal, but check the label and if it has all whole grains, and no trans fats or sugar it should be okay. I would pay special attention to the sugar grams; it should be only a few grams of sugar per serving.
I love your site – it’s been a great resource, since I’ve been South Beachin’ since February.
I need the answer to this question, though! 🙂 On Phase 2/3 can you eat Kashi GoLean cereal? It tastes so good, I’m so afraid that it’s not legal!!
Elyse, thanks so much for the nice feedback. I have a Canon Rebel XT, actually a model that’s a few years old. The newer rebels are even better. I feel like I’m barely starting to learn about using a digital SLR camera, so I’m glad you’re enjoying the photos.
Hi Kalyn,
I just wanted to take a moment and let you know how much I love your blog. The recipes are phenomenal and I have garnered praise for each that my friends have tasted. I also really appreciate the photographs of the food and was wondering what type of camera you utilize?
Thanks so much,
Elyse
Jenn, I’m not sure I want to start a new section for lunches, but I can give some suggestions. Maybe I can do a post about it occasionally.
Actually, I just take whatever I’m cooking that week for lunch for the most part, because I work in a school where we have a microwave. I eat soup a lot for lunch in the winter, and salads when the weather is warmer. Today I had leftover avocado and tomato salad for lunch, with a piece of whole wheat bread. Actually the thing I eat most of all for lunch is probably taco salad. I made the meat and freeze in small containers, then take the lettuce, meat, cheese, tomatoes, and dressing separately and combine at lunch time. Another favorite for lunch is black bean chili.
Hope those ideas are helpful.
Thanks for the Blog. Love the recipes. I do have a question. What do you bring to work for lunch? Could you start a section for brown bag lunches? Or even lunches that taste good if the they are refrigerated? This seems to be the part of the day that ruins my best efforts. Thanks,Jenn
Debbie, you could use sugar-free barbecue sauce. That’s the only idea I have.
I am new to the blog but am enjoying it especially since I just recently purchased my first crock-pot. I am looking for a recipe for pulled pork that would fit in with the South Beach Diet. All the ones I am finding call for a 16 oz bottle of bbq sauce. Thanks
Hi Ria,
Nice to know you’re a fan of the blog. I’m not sure what to offer for advice (actually I don’t know for sure what you mean by “an Indian meal.” But I don’t think you have to avoid carbs entirely to be successful on the diet. I know that Dr. Agatston advises people to sometimes just start with phase two if they find phase one too difficult. I think if you avoid white flour, potatoes, and starchy white rice and eat mostly vegetables, low-fat protein, and dried beans and legumes you will lose weight. Basmati rice is actually pretty low glycemic, and Indian dals and curries should be goood too. Good luck.
Hi Kalyn, I read your blog at least once a day and I’m a big fan. My problem is trying to learn to follow the south beach diet in India as we mostly eat a Indian meal for lunch and dinner. Its hard to plan the menus and stick to no carb meals entirely. Can you help me with some pointers as to how to just get started..
I have made some soups from the recipes on your blog – the chickpea one is a favourite at home.
Ria
HJC, thanks so much for the nice feedback. As I’ve said, love getting comments like this.
I just want to THANK YOU for your website. I know how much time it takes to do this. My boyfriend and I love all the recipes that you share. Without them I would never have all these wonderful healthy dinners to serve. I just made your white bean and artichoke dip and it was soooooo GOOD. I am never buying store made hummus again.
Please keep more tasty dishes coming! =)
SaysPhoebe, THANK YOU! I love knowing that the blog is helpful for people. As for the triglycerides, I was on medication for that and high blood pressure when I started South Beach, and now I am off both medications (woo hoo!) so stick with it!
Kalyn, I know that you hear this often, but I wanted to add my two cents – with any luck you won’t ever tire of hearing it.
Your food blog is simply the best around! Not only do I love your recipes, but the site is friendly, accessible, and down to earth. You pepper your blog and recipes with great ideas, suggestions, tips, and most of all, support. It’s a pleasant place to visit and I rarely find a recipe that I can’t wait to try.
My husband and I began South Beach a little over a month ago, primarily to control his trigylcerides (first test results due this Friday!)- I have lost ten pounds thus far and he’s lost fifteen so with any luck the blood chemistry is improving as well.
I love to cook and we both enjoy eating so your site is a joy. If I ever stand in my kitchen with a knife in one hand and a pound of something in the other and can’t quite decide what to make for the evening, I just think, “I wonder what recipes Kalyn has to sugggest?” and I go to your search engine tool to come up with something new.
My husband works a very high stress job and right now, he is very motiviated and driven to stay on this diet until his goals are met. I’m quite proud of him, but I also know that the food makes a big difference. If he bores of the meals, he’ll bore of the diet and when I start to stall, your site keeps my creative juices flowing in the kitchen.
I have told others about your site and will continue to do so, many times over.
Thanks for all your time and hard work – you’ve helped us greatly!
Hello! Thank you for making this blog! I am just starting phase 1 and need recipes for it. I too am an elementary school teacher in IL. Thank you so much for all the quick recipes!

I am so appreciative of your website. We’ve been on and off the South Beach for a few years. Your recipes help me to stay “on” as best we can.
Janiam, glad to hear you are enjoying the blog. Thanks for taking time to let me know.
Hi, and good morning from the snowy environs of New York City.
Kayln, to say I was thrilled to find your blog is an understatement. It’s my one stop for all the South Beach Diet recipes I could hope for. I’ve bought all the books, but you and your readers find so many interesting variations, that they open up a myriad of new ways to prepare and cook the healthful meals.
My husband and I, both actors here in New York, are in the middle of the first week of Phase Two. It’s important for us to look good, as I’m sure you remember the old adage “the camera puts 10 lbs on you.” Followed by the update that is attributed to the Ross character on “Friends”: “Really? How many cameras did they shoot you with?”
After coming home from visiting my step daughter and her family, down south, where everything is fried and salted, I stepped on the scale and saw something I hadn’t seen in six years…the needle went past 150!! I had been on the South Beach Diet starting in 2003 and had lost 26 lbs., and pretty much kept it off for three years. Then after a, once in a lifetime, vacation “down under”, the pounds started to creep back up. Like so many others, on January 1, we started the South Beach Diet, once again. This time I find that it’s somewhat easier. Also I don’t get discouraged easily as I’ve learned to step away from the scale. Once a week is plenty. I’ve also found another helpful hint, using really good non-stick cookware. It cuts down on the fat, and it soooo easy to clean.
Well, as I wrote earlier, I love reading the recipes you post, and hopefully will be able to post some of my own variations.
Wishing us all a happy, healthy 2009, and may we all win at losing.
Jen, thanks and good luck to you and your friend. (You can do it, it’s really not that hard. You just need a bit more thought about what you’re eating!)
Kalyn,
I’m a fairly new 7th grade teacher and over the past few years the pounds have crept on – something quick while grading, etc, that’s usually not too healthy. I’m now almost 20lbs over my target weight. My New Year’s Resolution is to Get Fine in ’09! A coworker of mine went to see his doctor recently and was told that he needs to lose 20-30lbs immediately because he’s risking diabetes at this point. The doctor suggested South Beach.
So I’ve been perusing the internet and checking to see if it’s something I can handle – now I’m pretty excited! I love to cook, but only get to do so on the weekends generally, but many of your recipes are pretty basic and I think I can do it. My co-worker and I are each taking responsibility for the lunch and snack portion of 2 days a week, leaving the fifth as a “fend for yourself” or leftover day. We’re pretty pumped. Thanks for the great site, and congrats on getting so healthy!
-Jen
Sarah, brilliant idea to use the Farinata as breadcrumbs! I will be trying that.
I used to think quinoa was a seed and would be okay for phase 1, but I saw it on an official South Beach list somewhere listed as phase 2. I don’t remember where it was, sorry. So if you’re really trying to be strict, I’d say wait a couple weeks before adding it.
Kalyn,
Thank you so much for all of your creativity in recipes! I’ve probably read all of them! My question is, would you consider quinoa a grain and not allowed until phase 2 or is it allowed(in moderation, of course) for phase 1 since it is a complete protein and not technically a grain? Also, with the farinata, would it be okay to use it for “breadcrumbs” during phase 1? Thank you so much!
I just came upon your blog Kalyn and I love it! I have saved it as a favorite. I was getting a little tired of the recipes from my South Beach cookbook and finding a hard time finding ingredients here in northern MN but yours are easy recipes and we have all that I need at our local grocery store! My husband LOVES the idea of having meatloaf again!
Barbara, welcome, and glad you like the blog.
Hi Kalyn,
I googled a recipe for “Sun-Dried Tomato Spread” and found your website…so glad I did.
I love your site and I got a great recipe too..now I’m signed up for emails from you…thanks Kalyn!
Barbara from Toronto
Anonymous, glad to know you are enjoying the recipes.
I just saw Dreamfields pasta today at the Smiths on 400 South and 5th East. They only have spaghetti, linguini, penne, and macaroni though. I also find it at the Smiths on 2100 South and 9th East. I know you can order it from Amazon.com too. If Smiths stopped carrying it, I’d definitely buy it online, that’s how much I like it.
Thanks for all the recipes and tips, I really enjoyed cooking a few of your recipes for thanksgiving. I live in Salt Lake as well and am having a hard time finding the dreamfields pasta, I’ve checked at the Smiths on 400 So and a few others. Where have you been able to find it lately? Thanks!
Meg-a-bites, thanks! Glad to hear it’s helpful for you.
Just wanted to say your blog is fantastic!! I just found it and am excited to peruse and see what all I can try. The South Beach items are especially helpful, since it can be difficult to find free recipes that stick to the rules by phase!
Thanks!
Anonymous, I’m quite sure you can find it in Ogden. In Salt Lake I can get it at Smiths, Whole Foods, or Albertsons. It’s often by the health foods and not by the spices in some grocery stores. If you don’t find it in one of those places I’m pretty sure a health foods store would have it.
Good luck finding it!
I just found this wonderful site!! I have found Spike seasoning in several recipes. Somewhere in the site I saw that it could be purchased on Amazon. I was interested if this seasoning can be found locally — I live in Ogden. I want to cook some breakfast recipes this weekend.
Anonymous, I’m not qualified (and don’t have time!) to answer specific questions about the diet, but I’m thinking you should check the book because in my book it says “milk fat free or 1%, buttermilk fat free or 1%, and yogurt fat free” are okay for phase one.
I am so glad I found this site. I am just starting the South Beach diet with my 18 year old daughter. I get the basic concept of the plan, but I am a bit confused on phase one and dairy. In the “rules” it says no milk for breakfast, lunch and dinner. I like to put a little skim milk in my coffee. Will that cause any issues with the diet? Also, my daughter loves milk and would like to drink up to a glass per day in phase one. Will that affect her progress?
I want to thank you for your site. I’m in my third week of menu planning in my pursuit to take the stress out of “what’s for dinner” and to be more organized. Even though I’m no longer working, (job as a media specialist cut due to budget) I was still in the old habit of waiting till the last minute to figure out dinner. Your site has been a blessing! I see what recipes look good and what recipes you suggest to pair, type it in my menu spreadsheet and insert a hyperlink. This makes having the recipe on hand when I’m ready to cook a snap. I do my planning a week at a time. I’m using a template I found at http://penniesnpounds.blogspot.com/2008/08/numbers-template-for-meal-planning.html.
The fact that you have “South Beach” recipes has also prompted me to start back on the diet. I love how you organize your site with the different sections.
Thank you Kalyn!
Anna, since this comment is right under the comment about del.icio.us, first I want to make sure that all the recipes I’ve saved on del.icio.us are not South Beach diet recipes. Hopefully you’re just talking about the blog.
Not sure why you would have gained three pounds on phase one? You might want to check the food lists in the South Beach book again to be sure you’re doing it right. Good luck.
Kalyn, I love your web cookbook. It has helped me immensely with dinner ideas. Been on Phase One for 10 days now. First week I gained 3 pounds, now I back to square one, hopefully next week I’ll start seeing some results.
Rob, it’s not software, but I use an online bookmarking site called del.icio.us to store links to the recipes I want to save. You can use tags to create categories and give the recipe any title you’d like.
It’s here if you want to check it out.
I’m looking for an easy, simple yet usable software program in which to keep my recipes from this site so that I can recall them at any time. Does anyone know of, or use, something that they are please with and wouldn’t mind recommending?
Thanks!
Rob
Anonymous, thanks so much for the comment about the photos. I do have a lot to learn (and there are plenty of food bloggers that take better pictures!) but I’m working hard on it. Comments like this really make my day.
Dear Kalyn,
I really appreciate the wonderful pictures you take and use in your recipes. There are a lot of recipes I might not have tried, but after looking at the pictures, I was tempted – and haven’t been sorry once! Thanks!
Kalyn, I love your website and the recipe that we tried was great!
Anonymous, the Dixie Cups are a great idea. Thanks for sharing.
Jenn, If you do try South Beach I hope you find the the blog helpful. Thanks for taking the time to let me know you like it.
Hi Kalyn
I wandered over here from Homesick Texan. This blog is wonderful. I have forever been recommended to try SB from my doctor. I read the book and really felt … well, blah. Your blog offers so many ideas and suggestions. It is like striking gold!
Thank you for being here!
Hi Kalyn! I just wanted to comment on your phase one snack colum! I did SBD a few years ago, and it works Great! I wanted to let you know about a cool trick i figured out for measureing out nuts. Your supposed to have 1 oz right??? DIXIE CUPS! theyre easy to dip into the jars, and are perfect measurement. Plus, it makes it easy to transport in your car.
Stephanie, haven’t seen that recipe before, but from the ingredients you’ve described it sounds like it should be okay for South Beach. (This is only my opinion, I’m not an expert!) I’m not a big sweets eater, so I haven’t used the sugar free syrup that much. Lots of times it has sugar alcohol, which can cause gas, so be aware of that if you try it. If you do make it, let us know how it turns out.
Kalyn,
I found a couple of recipes on another blog for “fake french toast” where they are sweetening eggs with splenda and cinnamon and some add ricotta cheese and make a batter out of it. Someone thought to top it with SF syrup. Have you ever tried this? I’m anxious to see a more professional testing of this.
Kalyn, I’m just starting up my own blog and though it seems many people all over the world are doing it with such ease, I’m still a tad nervous. Mine is also a food blog but way more simple and basic, just what I call cheat-cheat recipes. I am very interested in your blog for several reasons, though. One, it’s about healthy food. Two, I’m also a teacher! Three, I’m very interested in weight loss and healthy eating, especially the SBD. If you check out my blog, keep in mind that it is in the infancy stages, perhaps even the pre-natal stage! Maybe one day mine will look half as great as yours. Keep blogging, Janie Guetzow 🙂
Anonymous, there’s no way for me to know what foods you like and I’m afraid I just don’t have time to make menu suggestions for people’s specific needs. I suggest you look through the recipe archives (left sidebar) and see what looks good to you. Maybe start with Easy South Beach Recipes if you don’t have much time.
My own favorite lunch is definitely Taco salad, you could start with that recipe.
I am new to the SBD and am thankful that I found your blog. I am a teacher too, and I don’t have long to eat lunch; what quick lunches do you suggest so that I don’t get tired of salads everyday?
Laura, nearly every company that makes chicken and beef stock or bouillon cubes also makes vegetable stock. Any supermarket should have it by the canned stock, or vegetable bouillon cubes by the beef and chicken cubes. You could also get it online, I would just google “vegetable bouillon cubes.”
I need HELP! I can’t find vegetable stock any where! I’m not a cook. Need a solution without having to cook a vegetable stock soup. Thank You.
Kalyn — Thank you so much for doing this web site… what a wonderful gift it is! My husband and I have each lost 15 lbs in the last 5-6 weeks. By the end of week one I was SOOOO tired of eggs. But now we’re having fun trying new things and are being very successful at creating healthy, flavorful meals. Keep up the great work!
Thank you for your web site. I am in the process of reading South Beach Diet Supercharged. I am in need of recipes for breakfast for phase I. I found several. The Egg Muffins Revisited Again sounds good. If there is anyone that would like to recommend breakfast recipes that are low sodium .. please do…thanks
Kathryn, I’m not a baker at all so I can’t help you with that, but I’d try googling “high altitude baking.”
Since I’ve moved to Utah, I simply cannot bake anything right. I know it’s the altitude thing, but how do you fix this problem. I’m so tired of flat muffins and heavy bread. Help!
KL
Ronan’s Mama,
I have a lot of recipes using Dreamfields, and have written about the pasta too. I’ve never seen anything from South Beach officially saying it’s approved, but I ate it all the time I was dieting most strictly and it didn’t stop my weight loss.
You could find the recipes and posts I’ve written about it by entering “Dreamfields Pasta” in the search bar in the upper left column.
Thanks for the nice words about the blog.
Have you tried dreamfields pasta? It is supposed to be low carb, high fiber. I was just wondering if you knew anything about it and if it is allowed on the S.B. diet.
I love your blog and all its recipes. Thanks for the inspiration. It really is more than just eggs on S.B.
Anonymous, congratulations on the 104 pounds. I bought the Halloumi at Smith Food King on 2100 South.
Hi Kalyn,
I am a very satisfied customer regarding SBD-have lost 104 lbs since 3/8/07.
I really need to know where to buy halloumi cheese as I dont know which store you bought it at in your neighborhood. Yes, I am from SLC,UT.
Thanks for all those wonderful emails that have kept me on SBD.
I wanted to thank you for your blog!! I have been a devoted south beacher for 4weeks. I am just now allowing myself to go to phase 2. I was trying to lose 20 pounds( lost 10 pounds already). Your blog has made it simple in addition with the SBbooks. I use your site daily for great recipes. Thanks for your hard work and dedication!
Kelly, sorry but I don’t think I’ve seen that recipe.
Hi, Kalyn!
I followed South Beach pretty religiously a few year ago. One of my favorite recipes was for a mocha smoothie made with cottage cheese, fat-free half & half, ice, and instant mocha mix (fat-free & sugar-free). I cannot find that recipe anywhere, and I don’t remember the exact amounts used! Are you familiar with it? If so, could you send it my way?
Thanks,
Kelly

I don’t know if my Costco still has it, haven’t looked recently. I would write directly to Costco or check their web site.
I HAVE BEEN TRYING TO FIND THE KIRKLAND HERBED SEAFOOD RUB FOR WEEKS. COSTCO NO LONGER CARRIES IT. HOW CAN I GET A HOLD OF SOME. I’M WILLING TO BUY IT BY THE CASE, IF AVAILABLE.
I believe I read in the South Beach Diet book that the more fiber that we take in breaks down whatever sugar that we do have. I believe in staying away from alot of sugar and increasing fiber. I have seen alot of sugar free products out there and even some of the whole wheat breads they may say are sugar free but I’m sure there is a sweetener or molasses that they make up for in the ingredients. I know we need some sugar in us but I do try to keep it to a minimum. What are your thoughts on the fiber and sugar balance?
Under “South Beach Stuff” in the sidebar there is a post about the breads I recommend.
Kalyn,
What varieties of SBD friendly whole wheat bread do you recommend now? Is Natures Own ok?
Kalyn,
I did see your section about whole wheat bread and now there are some new varietys in the Walmart’s out there. Nature’s Own makes one that is a Double Fiber Whole Wheat bread with Omega 3. I still try to stay away from all bread but Dr. Agatston said whole wheat, multi grain or rye bread is ok. If they would get that high fructose corn syrup and the sugars out of the bread it would be better. I do check the ingredients label. I might have picked up a bad variety because it had that word enriched wheat flour listed in the middle of the ingredients. It is 50 calories per slice. Maybe they should sweeten these whole wheat breads with sucralose instead.
Ozarkman, congratulations on your success. I agree that South Beach is nutritionally sound. In fact, my doctor recommends it to his patients!
Kalyn,
Hi there, I just wanted to tell you I have been on the South Beach Diet as well and started back in July 2006 and now currently I am at Phase 3 and have lost 91 pounds. I was 230 pounds at the beginning and now down to 140 pounds. I am continuing the maintenance phase for the rest of my life so I can stay at this weight. I believe the South Beach Diet has alot of solid fundamentals and principles into what we should eat and not eat. Obesity is a problem in this country and Dr. Arthur Agatston said it is a leading contributor to heart disease and heart attacks. I have cut down completely on many of the bad foods I used to eat and now I eat more salads, high protein meats, seafood, reduced fat cheeses, and egg substitutes and green tea. I would have to say I have been sticking with the plan and it has worked as far as eating the right types of foods. Life is better on the South Beach Diet and it is the number one diet of all the diets out there in my opinion.
dmn, thanks for the nice feedback. I’ve been to Greece, but not Santorini so I can’t help with that, but have fun!
Kalyn, just wanted to tell you how much I enjoy your website, it is AWESOME,I look forward to getting your email and recipes everyday, I just read your blog from Amsterdam and loved it, my husband and I are planning to visit there within the next year, also can’t wait to read about your trip to Spain, have you been to Santorini Greece, we are planning atrip there also. Thanks again for such a great website!!!!! you have the best recipes, love them, so creative!
I just found your blog. Very well done, nice recipes and interesting information. You pack a lot of of good information in it.My wife and I are also teachers but I am the one who really goes out of my way to find interesting recipes, visit restaurants and try new recipes. My exploits are on my blog

I will post a your link on my site
Tanya, South Beach is based on the glycemic index, and honey and maple syrup are both going to be very high. Definitely for phase one and probably phase two they wouldn’t be permitted. Ingredients like this can be used in very small amounts, such as in a salad dressing or marinade. You might want to check out agave nectar, which is a low glycemic natural sweetener very similar to honey. If you enter it into the google search bar on my site you can find some things I’ve written about it.
Hi Kalyn! Kudos on having a terrific site for people who are looking for a lifestyle change when it comes to food. Not only has the site been super helpful with tips and advice from other bloggers, you have done us a great service by showcasing your recipes as well! Well done!
That said, I only have one question. Is honey or maple syrup ever allowed on South Beach?
Thanks so much!
Tanya
Hi bugs,
I’m afraid I don’t have time to organize a seed exchange, but maybe someone will see it here. Have you tried Googling “seed exchange?” That might work.
Hi Kalyn, do you have any seed exchanges for my veggie garden? I wish that you’d put up a seed exchange… I live in Asia and I wonder what tomatoes would grow in a tropical climate? Anyone wants tropical seeds? email me at [email protected] and I wish to have seed exchange partners..
Kayln:
Love your blog!….it has been a life-saver to me, it has helped me immensely stay on track with South Beach. I tried the peanut butter oatmeal, but used almond butter and a sprinkle of poppyseed and made it into almond-poppyseed oatmeal. Let me tell you, YUMMMMMMMMM!
WOW!!! Thanks for posting so many quick and easy recipes. Thanks for making it easier for me to stick to my new way of eating. I love your snack suggestions for during the work day.
Great receipes! Congratulations!
Anonymous, I only post recipes that I’ve tried and photographed. I would recommend either buying the book or looking at it in a bookstore. It wouldn’t be fair to the book publisher or my readers to start posting recipes I haven’t even tried, and I can barely keep up with the recipes on my own “to-try list” (I teach school all day) so I can’t really take requests about what to cook, sorry.
I am looking for the South Beach Peppery Zucchini Pasta recipe.
I think it was in the Summer South Beach Cookbook. If you have it please post it. Thanks so Much!
Hi Perry Girl.
I did try the Penzeys buttermilk dressing mix once (long time ago) and was not impressed. I use the Hidden Valley Ranch type and when I wrote an article for Blogher.com about the safety of msg I was very surprised to discover that the conclusion of most studies is that it’s not harmful. I’m not trying to convince you to use it, I just thought you might not have heard the latest about it. Anyway, good luck finding something you like. I just bought a big bottle of Uncle Dan’s Classic Ranch salad dressing mix at Costco, but didn’t try it yet.
Kalyn wonderful blog! And thank you for your profession, I have great respect for teachers.
I really like your Chipotle Ranch Dressing – the best flavor I have found so far is with Hidden Valley Ranch buttermilk packets the issue is that HV includes MSG..so I am trying to find an alternative that tastes as good. I have tried about 4 different kinds … all not as good as when I make it with HV buttermilk.
Has anyone ever tried the Penzey Spice Buttermilk Ranch? Is it good?
Just thought I would ask before I ordered a large bag.
Chris, I wrote a post about how to make perfect hard-boiled eggs and it’s one of my most-read posts, so you are apparently not the only one who has that problem. Hope that will help.
Hi Kalyn…I’m always having trouble with boiling eggs, they nver come out uncracked..lol..is there a secret?
Thanks
Chris

Great Big Vegetable Challenge
Hi Kalyn, I think reading all your BlogHer recipes and looking at the great recipes here is starting to rub off on me. I even posted a recipe on my own blog the other day. Now that’s a first!
HOW DO I FREEZE OREGANO OR PARSLEY. PLEASE HELP. I LIVE IN OHIO AND IT IS GETTING COLD OUT. [email protected]
Thanks everyone for the nice feedback. I really appreciate hearing from you!
Hi Kalyn,
I just wanted to say thank-you for such a wonderful SBD friendly spot to go for great recipes and ideas.
I found it in a message in a yahoo SBD group. A great page all around.
Thanks Kalyn.
Nice blog Kalyn.
This blog is a godsend! My hubby and I are just finishing our Phase 1 of SB and are so amazed by the results. I have never followed such an easy plan… however, we were looking for more meal ideas and, lo and behold, I found your amazing blog filled with pleasing recipes and great comments. Thanks so much for all your hard work – I, too am a full-time teacher and know how stressful life can be as an educator… but I am definitely glad you take the time to maintain such a great site. I look forward to trying these recipes!
